Phuket Fishing Grounds & Seasons
Phuket Fishing Guide
Phuket has numerous advantages over other destinations when it comes to big game fishing. The fact that it has yet to come into the international spotlight as a gamefishing venue means that there are plenty of whoppers out there waiting to be caught and the waters of the Andaman Sea provide perfect conditions for many of the best gamefish in the world, such as marlins, queenfish and dolphin fish (dorados). The best time for going after these prize fighters is during the southwest monsoon season (July to October) but people hook thrilling catches all year round.
Phuket also has a wide range of well populated fishing grounds, both close to the island (the Racha Islands) and farther afield (the Similans). Fortunately there's also a wide variety of companies offering charters and join-in trips to all of the hottest spots.

Phuket Fishing Charters
While most charter companies are booked far in advanced for multi-day excursions, fully equipped sportfishing boats are readily available for one day outings. Aloha Tours and Blue Water Anglers have small fleets of local craft and imported sportsfishing vessels for charter. They also offer daily join-in day trips. The standard one day charter on a professional boat like the 'Andaman Hooker' or Phuket Big Game Fishing's Dorado includes all gear, water, soft drinks and lunch and runs at about US$350 per day (up to 6 persons, 08:30 to 18:30).
Generally it's cheaper to rent a boat for light tackle inshore fishing; around 6,500 baht for six to eight persons for five to six hours of fishing.
Renting a Thai longtail boat and trying the old method of hand-jigging for fish is a novel experience. Chartering a longtail boat costs around 40 to 600 baht per hour and the vessels can comfortably hold three to four people. It's a very relaxing way to spend an afternoon.
