Anantara Phuket Resort & Spa Review
Mai Khao Beach - Phuket0
Anantara is, not to put too fine a point on it, unadulterated seaside luxury. This excellently-run all pool-villa resort pays acute attention to details.
From the balance between the natural surroundings to the manicured flora throughout the grounds, to well-appointed and luxuriously fitted villas, good taste is evident.
Catering to the higher-end market, connoisseurs of sophistication will appreciate the design, top-quality materials used and professional staff training at Anantara.Read More

Where is It?
Anantara flanks Mai Khao Beach in the north of Phuket. At 10 kilometres long, this western-facing pristine and quiet beach is Phuket's longest and is a nesting place for Olive Ridley sea turtles as well as being a perfect stretch for power walks.
Some 15 minutes from Phuket International Airport and close to the Sarasin Bridge connecting Phuket to the mainland, Anantara is located in Sirinath National Park in Phuket's least built-up region.
How Many Villas?
Anantara has 13 Pool Villas, nine with king beds, four with twin beds; 30 Garden Pool Villas, 22 with king beds and eight with twin beds; 28 Lagoon Pool Villas, all with king Beds and 11 Sala Pool Villas, all with king beds.
All villas have a total space of 180sqm with 70sqm of indoor and 110sqm of outdoor space. The villa swimming pools are 35.74sqm while the Similan Suite boasts a whopping 360sqm, 165sqm indoors with a 50sqm swimming pool.
Beds in the suite are a king-and-twin combination.
My Garden Pool Villa was a delicate balance of modern technology and design with Thai décor and influence. The dark-stained wooden furniture contrasts nicely with colourful cushions on the corner day bed while the wooden floors of the bedroom and dressing room cede into the brilliant whites and stainless steel fixtures of the bathroom.
A surround-sound iPod and docking station serve to add atmosphere as does a large-screen wall-hung LCD Samsung TV. The bedroom atmosphere can easily be altered by opening and closing the ceiling to floor curtains and altering various lighting options and as for storage, the dressing room has ample wardrobes, along with a trunk at the foot of the king-size bed.
An espresso machine is accompanied by tea-making facilities with quality tea and real milk. My welcoming drink in an iced chest is ultra-fresh pineapple juice that comes with a selection of seasonal fruits. The villa features an indoor and outdoor rain shower and a mounted bath at the head of the pool accessed by bathroom sliding doors.
Outside, flooring is wooden decking with two sunbeds, a complete wooden corner 'sala' space with bedding and cushions next to a full mini-bar and a private acclimatised wine cellar, along with quality glasses.
Make no mistake, this is top-end quality with an impressive attention to detail (there's even a First Aid Kit in one of the cupboards) that prevails relentlessly throughout the resort.
La Sala is Anantara's signature restaurant. It also hosts an excellent breakfast buffet with a wide and healthy range of freshly squeezed juices, tailor-made juice cocktails, cereals, and both Asian and Western breakfast choices. Lunch and dinners are Italian-influenced with excellently prepared dishes by a top-level Australian chef.
Right next to the restaurant is The Tasting Room, an acclimatised and well-equipped wine 'cellar' with light food accompaniments. The nearby Tree House is a tastefully appointed bar designed around an ancient Banyan tree and reached by a spiral staircase. Here, guests can enjoy an extensive drinks list along with Thai tapas.
Sea.Fire.Salt. is situated right by Mai Khao Beach and the infinity pool. The restaurant features seafood and barbecued meats with a Mediterranean touch and a DJ who sets an urbane party mood. Adjacent is the Infinit
y pool bar with its cocktail 'mixologists' and light snacks. Anantara has 24-hour room service.
Anantara is located relatively far from Phuket's tourist beaches with their many entertainment options but the resort more than compensates by offering a rich choice of leisure and cultural activities. The Anantara Spa Phuket offers from one-hour treatments to five-day packages and a whole gamut of highly professional treatments in between and is open daily from 10:00 to 22:00.
Beach activities include windsurfing, sailing (Blue Wave Bravo and Hobie Wave Cats), and twin-seat ocean kayaks. The resort has three complimentary hard tennis courts fitted with night lights and an air-conditioned, superbly appointed fitness room as well as a yoga sala where basic to advanced classes are available.
Of course guests can simply relax by the beachside infinity pool, open from 07:00 to 20:00 after a ride in the surrounding countryside on complimentary mountain bikes. For the more intellectually minded there is the classically-designed library with its broad range of international books and computer workstations.
Those looking for a little exotica to take home will find the Gallery boutique sells trinkets and textiles. The resort's 'Entertain me' weekly schedule offers daily group activities at The Studio from 08:00 to 17:00 which encompass Batik painting to candle making to classical movies to pétanque and much more.
For children from four to 12 years old the colourful Turtle Club is open from 10:00 to 18:00 daily while Anantara offers a babysitting service. Internet connections are WiFi and Lan.
Deservedly joining the top-flight resorts in Phuket, Anantara evades shallow flash and goes for reliable quality.
With beautifully designed and totally private pool villas that are a world of luxury in themselves, the wonder is that so much effort has been put into every single level of the resort, from the seemingly irrelevant to the glaringly obvious.
