Baan Rim Pa Restaurant - Phuket
Patong Beach Restaurants & Dining
Happily enough, Phuket has its share of fine-dining restaurants. Quality is not an issue here if you’re willing to pay for it.
But for a special night out, a real dining experience there’s pretty much only one restaurant that covers all the bases and that’s Baan Rim Pa.
Top décor, location, staff, chef, atmosphere, entertainment and of course food – Baan Rim Pa has them all.
Where Is It?
Baan Rim Pa is located just north of Patong at fashionable Kalim Beach.
A four-minute ride from the centre of Patong, Baan Rim Pa is on a small cliff overhanging the beach (‘Pa’ means ‘cliff’ in Thai so the name translates as ‘The House by the Cliff’) and was the restaurant founder’s house at one time. Baan Rim Pa has sweeping views of the whole of Patong Bay.
Décor
Predominantly teakwood and brass, Baan Rim Pa by night positively oozes class. The bar stays to the traditional side of things with brightly backlit liquor bottles and impeccably-dressed staff while a grand piano stands adjacent to it.
On the sea-side of the restaurant there are wooden alcoves where diners can get a better view – and feel – of the surf breaking on granite rocks some 20 feet below.
Burnished wooden floors and subtle lighting make up the classical feel while marble bathrooms top the class act up.
Atmosphere
Baan Rim Pa is, no doubt about it, a fine-dining institution of the higher order, but hey, this is Thailand so this is not nose-in-the-air territory.
Far from it; laughter rings out, even at the busiest time of evening and the background splash and crash of the sea combines well with Tommy Doyle playing the grand piano with the occasional guest musician. Classy yet sassy is the best way to describe the atmosphere at Baan Rim Pa.
Wine
Director of Wine Randy Chin’s cellar is quite simply one of the best in the country. The restaurant has won the Wine Spectator award of excellence for the past seven consecutive years and you’ll be looking at labels from 2,000 to 100,000 baht when dining here.
Staff members are accordingly knowledgeable about what wine to pair with meals so don’t be shy about asking.
Food
A good way to start off a meal at Baan Rim Pa is to sample the appetizer selection which features herbed minced chicken and sweet corn in pastry shells; fried prawns and nut wrapped in an egg net; crispy rice noodles with minced fried basil leaves.
Then move on to mains with dishes like soft crab fried with chili jam and garlic or the gorgeous duck in thick creamy curry sauce and lychees.
The whole idea behind Baan Rim Pa is to invite diners to sample Royal Thai Cuisine in regal surroundings and it succeeds well, except the seaside location puts the whole experience into overdrive.
Service
The very embodiment of Thai grace, style and politesse, the predominantly female staff at Baan Rim Pa are another example of why it is a class act.
