    Sophisticated Sunday Brunch at Angsana Laguna Phuket

    The Bodega & Grill Sunday Gourmet Brunch at Angsana Laguna Phuket in Bangtao offers an unusual take on this popular easy-going dining premise. While it does include a seafood buffet, which is a common feature among the big brunches in Phuket, it is modest in scale and scope, acting only as a sideshow (admittedly a first-class sideshow, with high-quality fresh ingredients) to a gastronomic treat of 11 high-quality hot dishes and a three-part dessert – a grand total 12 courses!

  • Naturally, 12 courses of full-sized portions would be impossible to eat and enjoy. It is better to think of this as being like a buffet, but where you don’t need to stand up to collect the next course. Instead, small samples of a wide range of dishes are brought to your table, each freshly and lovingly prepared, giving you a far better standard of food than you would get on a purely buffet brunch. We recommend starting your brunch as close to 12:00 as possible so that the kitchen can give you more time between each course, allowing you to digest the last and prepare for the next.

    Aside from the fact that not having to repeatedly leave the table to refill your plate makes the Bodega & Grill Sunday Gourmet Brunch a much more social experience, this approach also means that a higher quality of ingredient can be used in each course without the risk of excessive waste. This allows Bodega & Grill Chef Jonathan Bruell to include such highlights as seared Hokkaido sea scallops, steamed Australian black lip mussels, seared foie gras truffle gnocchi, and grilled Miyazaki 18-month grain-fed rib eye. Each of these comes with fantastic accompaniments and rich sauces, making each an even greater delight than the last.

    It is entirely possible that, when it comes to your turn to sample the brunch, none of the above dishes will be on the menu. The selection is rotated every three weeks, though there are consistently foie gras, prawn and scallop dishes as well as two red meats. When we sampled the brunch, shortly after it started in June 2016, it also included a grilled king prawn, mushroom broth with chicken dumplings, riso pasta spicy Chorizo ragout, pan-fried seabass, double-cooked star anise pork belly, grilled Middle Eastern spiced lamb chop kofta, a selection of cheeses and a triple-whammy of desserts consisting of Tiramisu, confit pineapple strawberry sorbet and a white chocolate and passionfruit mousse.

    Naturally, this sophisticated approach to a buffet brunch is not the cheapest on Phuket. For just the food, the price is 1,950 baht ++ per person while 2,950 baht ++ also gives you free-flow wines, beers, spirits and soft drinks. It is intended to be a fairly exclusive experience, to be savoured by those who really enjoy their food, which is doubtless why it is held in the elegant but modestly-sized setting of the 40-seat Bodega & Grill.
