Cudos Restaurant & Bar in the Surin Beach/ Cherng Talay area is remarkable. Most new restaurants in Phuket experience teething troubles either in the kitchen, marketing, location or hiring reliable staff. Still, if this is the case at Cudos, on the surface of things it'd be hard to guess that the restaurant has only been open a few months as both its service and ambience suggest a more mature establishment.
Cudos is themed on Mediterranean food expertly mixed with local products and as a result the cuisine is not only delectable but healthy and wholesome.
Cudos is located right next door to Surin Plaza, an upscale shopping mall on the main road between Cherng Talay and Surin Beach. Look for the distinctive black name sign. Park at the Plaza, or on the opposite side of the road.

Strikingly symmetrical with a corridor-shape seating area that leads to the bar and out into a large al-fresco, amphitheatre-like dining space, Cudos keeps things relatively simple with classic-white tablecloths, a row of red low-slung ceiling hanging lamps, brown walls with eclectically colourful art works providing a contrast to the uniformity.
The Dali-esque impressionist paintings are by German artist Tilo Kaiser and are in fact for sale, thus assuring that the décor at Cudos is constantly changing. Clever stuff.
Chic and discreet; the atmosphere is certainly helped along by a background music track that features Latin (think Sérgio Mendes) and jazz snippets along with general Mediterranean samples.
The amphitheatre-like al-fresco dining section past the bar is especially atmospheric with its soft lighting, 60-foot tall tamarind tree and overhead stars.
Once again, the well-chosen wine list displays an expert touch. At 35 labels balanced between Old and New worlds it’s not a terribly extensive list but it possesses all you need to complement the Med menu.
Two of the red wines we particularly appreciated with this genre of food were the full-bodied and dependable Feudi di San Marzano Primitivo and Carpenito Dogajolo Sangiovese, a cabernet that was a great marriage with the main course of duck. By the way, the barman is a talented mixologist.
Compartmentalised into five dish categories, Tapa/Mezze, Entrée, Wood-Fired Pizza, Main and Side, the menu is a veritable list of Med delights. Well worth trying is the ‘Cudos 4 favourites’ dish, comprising jamon, salami, fresh (locally produced) mozzarella and fried artichokes.
Equally flavoursome as tapas is the pan-fried tuna in lemon butter with pickled vegetables. Roast vegetables and goat’s cheese tart on a pestocress salad is also very highly recommended. For mains we sample roasted duck on a bed of Umbrian lentils with roasted pumpkin and salsa verde.
Cheerful, competent and with a ‘can-do’ attitude the staff members at Cudos Restaurant & Bar are attentive and are not at all shy at speaking English.
