Jan M R Verduyn
Dusit Laguna Resort GM Interview

by Rungtip Hongjakpet Izmen

Jan M R Verduyn started off working in his teens in restaurants in his native Belgium. Deciding that the hotel industry was the career for him, he studied at the Higher Institute for Food Industries and Tourism in Brussels and followed this up with further hotel business studies. In 1984 he made his first move overseas, taking a post as assistant food and beverage manager at the Khartoum Hilton in Sudan.

His career since then has taken him to countries around the world, including Nigeria, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Cameroon, Vietnam, Kenya, and South Korea. His last post before moving to Phuket was at the Anassa Hotel in Cyprus.

He also served as a sailor on the Belgian Navy supply ship Godetia while doing his compulsory military service. Now this father of two, when not busy running the 226-room Dusit Laguna Resort, or overseeing the 28 villas under development, enjoys playing squash and tennis, swimming, cycling and – when he gets the chance – going skiing.

Did you always want to work in the hotel business? How did you get into it?
Always, ever since I was 16 and worked in a restaurant at weekends for pocket money. I decided to study in that direction, and after I finished my studies I went straight into the hotel industry. It’s a decision I’ve never regretted; it’s an industry full of challenges and rewarding moments.

What is your motto in running a hotel?
Never say “No” to a guest; never ask staff to do something you are not willing to do yourself; and enjoy your job.

Miss Universe at Dusit Laguna Resort

How long have you been running the Dusit Laguna Phuket?
For two and a half years now.

What do you think is the greatest challenge in working in Thailand?
Creating a sense of urgency in Thai people. I believe this is a phrase that doesn’t exist in the Thai language.

What do you think about the Phuket hotel industry in general?
It will be heading towards a great future for at least the next 10 years. But it will also face challenges such as a shortage of skilled foreign-language-speaking staff, along with problems of infrastructure – roads, the airport and so on – being unable to keep up with the pace of economic development.

20th Anniversary of Laguna

What is the overall plan for the coming high season and for 2008?
Foremost is to satisfy our guests so they will come back again next year. Then in 2008, we’ll be continuing with refurbishment of hotel rooms and, of course, the launching of our ocean-front pool villas and lagoon pool villas.

Any thoughts you would like to share with our readers?
We are using the gifts of heaven to create heaven on earth. I want to encourage all your readers to experience this, first hand, at our resort.
