Loy Krathong Festival

Date: November 12, 2008
Venue: Saphan Hin, Phuket City and around the island

Loy Krathong, Thailand's most beautiful and delightful festival, is celebrated this year on November 12. On this day, Thais across the country pay respect to the gods of the waters and send their troubles floating away on a "kratong" – traditionally a small raft made from a slice cut from the stem of a banana plant and decorated with flowers and a candle. The sight of thousands of candlelit kratongs bobbing on the water is truly heart-lifting.
The most popular sites for Phuket locals to mark Loy Kratong are Saphan Hin and Suan Luang (King Rama IX) parks in Phuket City. Others celebrate the event at Patong Beach, on the lake just inland from Nai Harn Beach, at Kata Beach or at Karon Beach. Major hotels usually host a special evening so that guests can join in. Earlier in the day, there are always colorful parades as part of the celebration. At Saphan Hin, especially, there are also many entertaining shows on stage.

As in the first festival, in 2007, the movies will be divided into four categories: “Slices of Life”, “Water”, “The World Around Us” and “Alternative Lifestyle”. The organizers are also hoping to screen as many world premières at the Festival as possible. They expect the seven days of the Festival to attract between 3,000 and 5,000 moviegoers. The biggest part of this number is expected to be foreigners living on the island, followed by Thais in their late teens and early 20s, along with Thai families; and foreign tourists.
