  • Gallery Café - Phuket

Hippie-chic Venue in Phuket Old Town

    0

Gallery Café is a hippie-chic lounge bar and restaurant located on Yaowarat Road in the heart of Phuket Old Town. Run by Pinky, a Bangkok-born patisserie chef with six years’ culinary experience in London, the place is a haven for those seeking classy European dishes, smoothies, ice-cold beers and expertly prepared cocktails.

Originally opened on Rassada Road in 2009, Gallery Café moved to its present location in 2014, offering a larger space to its customers in a splendidly renovated two-storey Chinese town-house. Gallery Café is very popular among expats and local residents for the quality of its food as well as for its laid-back and trendy atmosphere.

  • Gallery Café features three sections: the front porch is a great people-watching spot hosting two tables that allows guests to enjoy the lively and constant movements of passers-by on Yaowarat Road; once passed the porch, the pastel orange-themed main dining room proposes an eclectic choice of seating options with sofas, wooden tables and benches, marble café tables and chairs; the third area is set at the back of the restaurant, in an open-air courtyard featuring, maroon wooden flooring, turquoise exotic furnishing, two coconut trees, and a covered area in a similar style as the main dining room. It’s all very special, personal, and light years away from Patong’s brash commerciality. The kitchen is behind the covered part of the courtyard.

The atmosphere is relaxed and trendy: still, the effortless chic here has a distinct friendly side to it, as though the clientele has discovered the Gallery Café together, and like all shared experiences it’s all the better for it. This is the living, beating heart of Phuket Town so enjoy it to the max with a smoothie or a cocktail in your hand. Gallery Café is a hands-on cool place so things are close up and personal while Pinky herself makes sure of customer satisfaction. You won’t feel neglected here.

Gallery Café has a solid vision and sticks to it, with European food such as pizzas (170/200 baht), pastas (140/220 baht), sandwiches (100/250 baht) and even full English breakfasts (250 baht). There are several Mediterranean dishes to choose from here such as roasted vegetables with feta (180 baht) or chicken, Greek, Niçoise or Caesar salads (180/200 baht) and more. The food here is fresh, well presented and several dishes are downright healthy but if you want to be naughty, simply head to the cake and patisserie stand at the front of the café next to the mini wine cellar/fridge.

To her credit, Pinky tries to keep her wine prices to a minimum and offers a happy hour from 17:30 – 19:30 with cocktails (using exclusively premium brands) at only 100 baht. Beer is served in tall steins and the cocktails are expertly prepared by Noi, an experienced mixologist late of the highly esteemed Joe’s Downstairs in Patong. The wine list, featuring French and Italian labels comprises three reds and three whites along with one rosé.
