August 2007 - Affordable Phuket

Paddling at Relax Bay
Dear Reader,

One of the nicest things about Phuket is that you can plan almost any kind of holiday here on any sort of budget. But let’s face it – not many of us have a ‘money-no-problem’ clause in our holiday planning. Mere mortals like you and I tend to go for what is affordable and this is our theme this month: Affordable Phuket.

Affordable fun? Great idea! Join us on a James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay kayaking tour, a day out to the beautiful Phi Phi Islands, and affordable stays in Patong Paragon Resort and Kata’s Sugar Palm Resort. For those who are interested in the health aspects of their holiday we have the lowdown on yoga in Phuket.

This amazing island offers much, much more but that’s for future issues…
Until next time, enjoy!

Surfing in Phuket

Think surfing. Think waves as big as houses, curling breakers with surfers shootin’ the tube, spectacular wipeouts. Think Phuket. Surfing? Hmm. Nah. But if you think that, you’re wrong. Phuket has a small but lively community of surfers. Read more...

Kayaking/TAT/Sailing

This month, the news takes a green turn, with a lone kayaker campaigning for the world environment by paddling around Phuket Island, a warning on what global warming could do to Phuket’s burgeoning tourist industry and kids on a camping trip learning to live with Mother Nature. Read all about these exciting events in our August news. Read more...

Maitree Narukatpichai
President of the Phuket Tourist Association

Maitree Narukatpichai is a man with many hats. He is president of the Phuket Tourist Association (PTA) and a director of the Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa, which is owned by his family. James Bond Canoe Day Tour

Phang Nga Bay covers an area of 400 square kilometres and is home to some 100 islands, many of which could be entered for The Guinness Book of Records either for their beauty or for their freakish shapes. The bizarre, why-doesn’t-it-fall-over outline of Koh Tapu, next to James Bond Island or Koh Ping Ghan, has been a major draw ever since it featured in 1974’s Bond movie, The Man with the Golden Gun in which it was a fiendish ‘solar harvester’. Phi Phi Day Tour by Express Boat

The waters surrounding Phi Phi are the most luscious turquoise imaginable and teem with thousands of exotically coloured fish. The islands lie 48kms Southeast of Phuket and this translates as roughly one hour 20 minutes, in ferry-speak.

Capannina Restaurant and Palai Seafood

This month West meets East. We feature reviews of two very different – but affordable – restaurants: one on Phuket’s west coast and the other on the east side. Sam Wilkinson, our resident gourmet and bon vivant, bravely set out to test the culinary waters in Capannina – an Italian eatery in Kata Beach and Palai – a Thai seafood restaurant near Chalong. Did he eat seafood pizza? Was he crabby over his cannelloni? Find out more in our monthly review of what’s cooking in Phuket. Read more...

Yoga in Phuket

Yoga: What is it? A spiritual regime? A lifestyle system? A mental exercise? Or just a good way to get fit and beautiful? As Phuket.Com found out, it’s all of these and more, and for those who are interested in trying it out, there are plenty of options on Phuket.
