JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa Review
Mai Khao Beach - Phuket
The JW Marriott Phuket Resort and Spa on Mai Khao Beach was designed by Plan Associates in Bangkok. It first opened its doors in late 2001 and has since become a byword for excellence on the island.
Marriott features an award-winning spa and restaurant and has extensive dining and recreational options spread out throughout its grounds.
Where is It?
The Marriott is directly adjacent to Mai Khao Beach in northwest Phuket next to the Sirinath Marine National Park and protected sea turtle area.
Some 15 minutes north of Phuket International Airport, it also has easy access to neighbouring Phang Nga Province. See a location map...
How Many Rooms?
265 similarly designed guest rooms with 13 suites.
There are 12 one-bedroom suites with sea views and one Royal Suite comprising three luxurious villas and two bedrooms.
Room Facilities
The well-appointed rooms are spacious with a minimum area of 47sqm and each room features a balcony and an indoor sala – a Thai-style raised area. One third of the rooms are on the ground floor and these feature an extra 16sqm of private landscaped terrace.
Spacious bathrooms feature an oversized tub with both rain and normal showers in a glass-sided cubicle. The bathrooms also have wooden louvered sliding partitions for outside views or privacy. Bedding is king-sized single or two double beds.
nterconnecting rooms available on request. For guests with special needs there are three deluxe Sala Garden View rooms along with extensive wheelchair access on the ground floor.
Recreational Facilities
The resort is built on 27 acres of lush tropical beachside greenery and maximum use is made of it, along with the surrounding areas. For those who like to stay – or become – fit on their vacation Marriott is probably the best option in Phuket.
The three swimming pools are headed by the main pool which is 107sqm and features bubble beds, a children's pool with a water slide, a dive pool with hydrotherapy beds, and a lap pool for lengths. The other two pools are more for relaxation.
On the beach itself there is a large and complimentary selection of non-powered water sports including sea kayaks, windsurfers, boogie boards a Hobie Cat and two sailing dinghies while scuba divers can make use of the onsite PADI centre.
An extensive health and fitness centre includes a gym featuring six cardio trainer treadmills, four elliptical trainers, four 'bikes' and one step machine, 10 strengthening machines and a whole rafter of weights. There is one central widescreen TV and each exercise machine features its own private screen.
Just outside the gym, guests can help themselves to health drinks and fruit juices from the large wall fridge and for warming down the resort features a sauna, Jacuzzi and an award-winning spa.
There are three sizes of adaptable mountain bikes to select from and extensive external tracks and trails to follow on a map provided and tennis-lovers can book the two lighted Plexipave courts from 7am to 8pm except during the daily tennis clinics from 3pm to 4pm. Marriott has a champion tennis professional on hand.
The resort is well-known for its inventive teambuilding activities created by its 'Re-Creation' department and at present is a leader in Phuket in this area, handling up to 140 people in its physically active and challenging courses.
The Marriott Activity Zone Experience (MAZE) is another preset activity, practised throughout the world and breaks down to five different age groups with some 80 activities featuring cultural, holistic and sports pursuits.
Last but certainly not least in the wide selection of sports and recreation choices at JW Marriott is a commendable Kids Club with a whole rafter of children's activities daily, from aerobics to Frisbee flying and even participating in circus training with a group of Californian circus artists who specialise in teaching trapeze flying. There is also a teen's room that is purposely unsupervised so that 13-18 year olds can get to know each other and blend. Supervised activities for teens include a table tennis challenge and a bowling night out.
Overall
Marriott has all the bases covered for an active holiday, regardless of weather conditions. With superb facilities, extensive grounds and a favourable location Marriott has built up an impressive array of choices for its active and sport-loving guests.
Health food enthusiasts are also admirably catered for with spanking fresh whole wheat bread baked several times a day at the resort's deli along with a good choice of cereals and fresh juices.
Beach trekking is literally seconds away and the surrounding countryside ideal for exploring on foot or by bike. The old-fashioned concept of lazing a holiday away has never seemed so distant and dated when one begins to appreciate the Marriott's vision of the ultimate active holiday.
