Katathani Phuket Beach Resort Review

Where Is It?

Katathani flanks almost the entire beach of Kata Noi, a white-sand marvel of Nature, just south of Kata Beach on Phuket's Southwest coast. It is a 20-minute drive to Patong and 50 minutes from Phuket International Airport.

A 10-minute walk to Kata and its shops, tailors, restaurants and bars, Katathani is ideally located. There are several convenience stores and restaurants opposite the hotel but other than that, this is a supremely quiet spot. See map below...

How Many Rooms/Villas?

The Bhuri Wing stands back, set into a hillside. There are two room types here, 148, 36sqm Superior Rooms and 65, 40sqm Deluxe Rooms. The beachside all-suite Thani Wing has 218, 45-50sqm Junior Suites (the resort's most popular accommodation choice), 44, 75sqm Grand Suites, one 110sqm Two-Bedroom Suite and one 100sqm Royal Thai Suite – a grand total of 479 rooms and suites.

Suite Facilities

We stayed in a first-floor Grand Suite. These have the option of having two singles or one king-size bed with a convertible couch for an extra person.

At 75sqm the room was well large enough and a medium-sized balcony with chunky wooden chairs, table and hanging rack came as a welcome extra. With wood paneling and subtle lighting the room had a classic feel but also featured state-of-the-art amenities such as a DVD player with a 32" TV and an extremely effective air conditioning system (and optional ceiling fan).

The bathroom area was also extremely generous with full-length mirrors, an ovoid-shaped bath with a rain shower space set in sea-polished stones, a wood-paneled dressing area with lots of storage space and ample complimentary toiletries.

In short, the Grand Suites at Katathani blend traditional Thai design with modern conveniences. All guestrooms at the resort feature a private balcony, multi-channel TV, a fully stocked mini-bar, safety deposit box, adjustable air conditioning (plus ceiling fan in Grand Suites), coffee and tea-making facilities, optional high-speed internet hookup, complimentary toiletries and bathrobe and slippers.

Restaurants and Bars

Katathani has six restaurants and five bars. The large Chom Talay, in the Thani wing, serves as the main breakfast buffet and is a hive of activity from early until mid-morning. It features nightly live music and is a generously proportioned, open-sided eatery.

Upstairs from Chom Talay, La Scala offers excellent contemporary Italian fare in a classic setting with live piano music.

If you are a seafood enthusiast the centrally located Fisherman's Wharf is a favourite dining spot and a good sunset-viewing spot while over in the Buhri Wing the Cinnamon Restaurant features all-day dining and Mediterranean food.

Nearer the beach, the aptly named Beach Club bar serves poolside snacks and drinks. 

Leisure Facilities

This is where Katathani excels and it's fair to say that the daytime activities here are some of the best in Phuket with the added extra of being right on one of its premium beaches. The resort's Tew Son Spa, open from 08:00 to 22:00 daily offers a rich array of treatments ranging from 55-minute massages to luxury combinations lasting almost four hours.

The Chang Noi Kid's Club in the Burhi Wing has a full set of toys, computers, books and cuddly dolls in a cheerful room complete with child-size bathroom amenities.

Sports aficionados can avail themselves of two floodlit tennis courts or a game of golf on the mini course while in inclement weather table tennis in the games room is still an energetic and fun option. Katathani has two fitness centres and saunas, a dive shop and a small army of outdoor massage ladies who are kept fairly busy by guests because of their reasonable rates and admirable skills.

Computer terminals are not hard to find here as well as souvenir shops, a jewellry shop, babysitting services, library in the games room, a private clinic and beauty salon.

With a combination of natural beauty, fresh sea breezes, large grounds offering plenty of leisure and dining options, as well as a wide choice of accommodation, Katathani Phuket Beach Resort has all the bases covered to make sure that your holiday will be a memorable one.
