La Flora Resort Restaurants - Phuket
Patong Beach Restaurants & Dining
For beachside chic in the heart of Patong it would be hard to beat La Flora Resort & Spa. The spanking-new resort is a lesson in clean lines, clever use of space and modern thinking.
Its two food outlets, the Surface Bar and the somewhat oddly named Current of the Sea handle guests and passers by with aplomb.
Surrounded by seafood outlets, cheap trattorias, Irish pubs and street food outlets this is a happening part of town.
Where Is It?
La Flora is on Thaweewong Road, better known for its simpler moniker Beach Road. There is a small parking outside with a very friendly and helpful parking attendant.
Décor
The Surface Bar is built on the roof of the resort. It features large lounging sofas, some of which have awnings, wooden chairs and tables, and a Perspex surrounding ‘wall’ (which makes for better views out over the beach). Top 40 hits tumble out of strategically placed speakers while the sun sets out in the west. A great place for a sundowner.
The Current of the Sea has three sections, one close to the teeming Beach Road and another just by the resort’s pool with a rooftop dining option. It’s discreetly lit with a free salad buffet to the side.
Atmosphere
Short of being on the sand itself, the Surface Bar is just about the most atmospheric beachside bar along Patong Beach. Its aim is to be a chic, hip place to hang out in and by and large it succeeds at the task. Location, location, location are three words that sum it up.
Downstairs, things are helped along with friendly service and two strolling musicians. If you want a lively atmosphere, choose a table near the road.
Wine
With a surprisingly large wine list, the bases are covered through representation of all the major wine-growing areas of the world.
Our Hardy’s OP red is a beautifully clear and bouncy wine with strong tannins and aftertaste and as a result is a great companion to the meal.
Food
With a free salad bar and lots of healthy options such as olive oil and lots of vegetables, one can cheerfully indulge in a Mediterranean menu here.
One of the features of the Thai and international menu selection is a seafood basket which contains a snapper, lobster, mussels, crab, calamari and many other choices, order French fries and pile salad high then away you go… But be warned, the seafood basket doesn’t come in small versions so if you’re ordering one make sure that you’re either ravenous or in a large group.
Both Current of the Sea and Surface Bar share the same kitchen.
Service
Happy go lucky and cheerful, the wait staff members at Current of the Sea work hard to make sure everything’s well at your table.
