‘Mare’ is Italian for ‘sea’ and this moniker goes well for this spectacular restaurant right on northern Karon Beach. The signature restaurant of Centara Grand Beach Resort, Mare has a lot going for it, not least of all its colonial décor, romantic location and high standard of cuisine.
Large, with a fan-cooled and air-conditioned interior and a fan-cooled al-fresco section, Mare never feels overcrowded.

Romanesque columns and archways complement a colonial theme at Mare. A large open kitchen dominates the interior along with a tastefully fitted out wine room in which guests can dine.
Pink and turquoise trimmed marble floors stretch throughout with plenty of space for all. ‘Classic Italian balanced against a colonial feel’ would be the best way to describe the décor here.
Centara is without doubt a family resort so, except for late at night, expect a fair amount of children.
Still, the size of the place soaks up any rowdiness and, what with the sea only 20 metres away, the whole feel is that of a relaxed seaside, up-market dining location that is actually quite romantic later on in the evening.
The 50+ label list offers both new and old world choices with ease and style. A hearty and full-bodied Rosso di Montepulciano accompanies our meal and impresses with its complexity.
Here, you’ll get a full range of holiday cocktails and if you really want to live it up you can dine in the specially designated, air-conditioned wine room.
Mare serves pasta and stone-baked pizza during the day and classic Italian cuisine in the evening. For starters we sample a slab of grilled tomino Italian cheese on a bed of fresh tomato with arugula salad and a hint of pesto. The tomino is strongly reminiscent of Camembert and but possesses a superior after taste and as a starter it is pretty sensational in its simplicity and effect.
Following this, a dish of tagliatelle with ragout de canard and a hint of Parmesan is decidedly the hit of the meal with its superb texture and flavours. For mains, a filet of sea bass with herbs, and a zucchini-and-mushroom accompaniment is buttery and well presented – this is classic Italian dining at its zenith, made even more enjoyable by the seaside location.
The evening we were there was particularly hectic and staff members were busy to the point of distraction.
Where Is It?
At the northern part of Karon Beach snuggled into the hillside. You can access Centara Grand from the road leading up the hill out of Karon itself. The signage could be better, so stay alert.
Of course, you can get to the resort from the beach as it is a 10-minute stroll away from Karon itself.
