Where Is It?
At Surin Beach on Phuket's central west coast, about a 40-minute drive from Phuket International Airport and 20 minutes from Patong. The actual beach is accessed by crossing a road and a Causarina-tree-lined grass field. There are several hotels in the direct area and that means there's a fair smattering of satellite businesses close by. See map below...
How Many Rooms/Villas?
All in all there are 256 rooms which break down into three room types: 140, 32sqm Deluxe Rooms, 32, 32sqm Deluxe Pool Terrace Rooms and 84, 56sqm One-Bedroom Suites. For those seeking more space, Deluxe Rooms are connected to the One-Bedroom Suites.
Our One-Bedroom Suite has polished parquet floors with a convertible sofa that was made into a bed for our six-year-old boy. A 32" flat screen Sharp TV featuring 29 satellite channels in 10 different languages along with DVD player stands upon a deep-drawer cupboard.
Sliding floor-to-ceiling windows with both light and heavy curtains afford access to an outside sunbathing space with two loungers, cleverly hemmed in by Bird of Paradise plants – thus affording privacy. The hotel's swimming pool is steps away.
The suite's living room has more than ample hanging space in a large wardrobe as well as shoe storage by the door – a handy touch to keep things tidy. Next to the wardrobe is a workspace with telephone and high-speed internet connection. These rooms are big on storage space and there's even more next to the bathroom door where a full-length fridge stands. There is no minibar in Courtyard rooms but MoMo 2 Go – a deli in the lobby – stocks snacks, pastries, drinks and fruit.
The suite, however, features tea and coffee-making facilities. The bathroom has a single sink, a shaving and mid-length mirror with a full length mirror on the back of the door as well. A reinforced-glass walk-in shower stands to the side. Overhead lighting is strong and the white-tiled floor keeps things cheerful and bright. Complimentary toiletries consist of shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and body lotion.
In the bedroom is a firm, yet not too hard king-sized bed with another 42" flat screen TV with DVD player – this is a definite bonus as most hotels feature only one large TV with a smaller version in the bedroom. Again, there is ample storage space in the form of a large sliding-door wardrobe with a safety box with robes and slippers as well as a deep-drawer cupboard under the TV. As in the living room, floor-to-ceiling sliding doors with the same curtain arrangements lead out to two sun loungers.
Lighting options are plentiful throughout the suite. In a nutshell, this is attractive accommodation with a sensible combination of ultra-modern appliances and more traditional wall and textile décor along with a touch of modern art thrown in. There's plenty of space and with two easy accesses (we used the pool side doors) our suite felt even larger than its already generous 56sqm.
The hotel's all day dining MoMo Café is large (180 seats) and has indoors and al fresco seating options with an attractive wooden terrace overlooking the pool bar and the pool itself. Courtyard Marriotts worldwide feature 70% 'standard' food and 30% local fare and this means an international choice of food at MoMo Café.
Swirling New Age music hovers in the background while the friendly and discreet service is recommendable. Our meal was extremely enjoyable and the food was done to a turn along with an excellent bottle of American Sutter red chosen from the 45-label list. Breakfast is buffet with a good selection of dishes.
A 600sqm swimming pool with a giant bright-blue slide greets guests upon exiting the lobby. It's no coincidence that there is a superbly equipped and inventively run KIDSWORLD children's club with a 200sqm children's pool either as Double Tree is a family holiday destination.
Also overlooking the pool and slide area is an air-conditioned two-storey fitness centre featuring all the latest gear open 20 hours a day and staffed from 08:00 to 21:00. Paperbacks are for sale in the lobby and DVD's for hire at the reception.
A shuttle service operates to Patong Beach and Phuket Town and if you choose to go to the beach towels are provided at reception. For outside activities the Siam Adventure Club tour desk advises on local attractions.
The Destination has no less that five carpeted and air-conditioned meeting rooms ranging in size from 21sqm to 40sqm – each wired and wireless with a full range of audiovisual technology. As well as in-room high-speed internet access there is WiFi in public areas and a three-computer Business Corner in the MoMo Café area.
A good family-oriented hotel, DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Phuket-Surin Beach is well located in an attractive and calm area, and you can count on the fact that Marriott's high standards will be met here.
