Have you noticed our new look? Notice how it's easier to read your monthly magazine now? In fact this is the fifth time Asia Web Direct has revamped its look since 1996 (the last time being in 2006) and it was a fulltime job that lasted about one month for teams working in Phuket Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. In total, 30 Asia Web Direct websites have had a makeover.

Willy Thuan, Asia Web Direct's Chief Internet Officer says, "We feel it's time to refresh our look – to become more modern. We call the new look AWD 5.0 because it's the fifth time we have changed since we launched Phuket.com in 1996. This version is more user-friendly and has a faster loading time. What we're really looking for is the ultimate in easy access for our readers."

In the biggest private land deal made yet in Phang Nga Province, Hong Kong tycoon Richard Li’s Pacific Century Premium Developments Limited (PCPD) has reportedly paid some two billion baht for more than 1,000 rai of land in Thai Muang district, including the Thai Muang golf course.

Details of the development planned for the land have so far been kept under wraps but with more than 2 kilometres of beachfront, the megaproject is expected to include at least two luxury hotels, hundreds of villas and a marina.

The son of Hong Kong’s richest man, Li Ka-shing, Richard Li founded satellite network Star TV, which he sold in 1995 to media magnate Rupert Murdoch. In addition to the Thai Muang development, PCPD is involved in a number of high-end property and infrastructure projects in the Asia-Pacific region.

Phang Nga to get airport

Baan Nam Khem

It has been announced that a new domestic airport is to be built on the island of Koh Khor Khao to provide visitors to Phang Nga Province with an alternative to Phuket International Airport, which is an hour’s drive from most of the Phang Nga’s tourist areas.

The Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) has completed a public opinion poll which shows solid support for the project. A plan for the airport, along with a budget request for more than a billion baht to built it, along with a bridge from the island to the mainland at Baan Nam Khem, will be submitted to the cabinet soon.

The airport will cover an area of 1,400 rai and will be able to accept aircraft as large as Boeing 737s.

Road show gives Phang Nga a boost

After the giant ITB tourism exhibition in Berlin ended, the Tourism Authority of Thailand organised for representatives of 18 hotels and resorts from the Andaman Coast provinces to tour Spain and Italy between March 10 and 13, 2008, in an effort to increase the numbers of tourists from the two countries.

For Phang Nga the road show was particularly successful, Chittiporn Suttipiboon, President of the Phang Nga Tourist Association (PTA) told Phuket.com. The road show took in four cities, she explained – Barcelona and Madrid in Spain, and Milan and Rome in Italy.

“In Barcelona and Madrid, they know Phuket and Krabi, of course. But they don’t really know about [Khao Lak and Phang Nga] yet. However, many big agencies in Milan and Rome already know Khao Lak. Overall, we got good feedback. We hope to see some results within two years.

“We spent time briefing travel companies and the Spanish and Italian press about what the Andaman Coast region has to offer in terms of beach resort, new tourist attractions and facilities. Phang Nga’s unique selling point is sustainable tourism; we have what nature gave us – which is a very beautiful destination. We are not comparable with ‘hot list’ destinations like Phuket or Krabi,” Khun Chittiporn explained.

The PTA says there are 4,200 hotel or guesthouse rooms in Phang Nga, still less than the 6,000 that existed before the Asian Tsunami hit the area in December 2004. It predicts occupancy rates of 75 to 80 percent in the current high season period, from November 1, 2007 to April 30, 2008. Before the tsunami, occupancy rates in the equivalent period were 90 to 95 percent.

“In two years’ time, we hope to have tourist numbers in Phang Nga back to [pre-tsunami] levels,” Khun Chittiporn added.
