What's New, What's Hip on Phuket
September 2007

by Rungtip Hongjakpet Izmen

In recent years Phuket has been promoting itself as a “health destination”, the idea being that people can come to the island for a holiday and medical treatment for the same price (or less) than treatment alone at home.

Phuket.com visited the island’s latest health facility, Med Park at the Boat Lagoon and talked to Med Park CEO Poompong Patpongpanit about this brand new operation.

What's Hip on Phuket

Med Park consists of three units: a dental center, a skin clinic, and a spa and detox centre. It’s originator, Khun Poompong, owns DC One, a large dental center in Bangkok. He noticed that many of his customers came from Phuket. After many visits to Phuket, he was convinced of the real potential of creating Med Park. After an investment of 60 million baht and two years of construction, the park is now open for business following its soft opening.

"... very latest technology..."

Entering Med Park is like walking into a secret garden with an almost Zen-like atmosphere, and the green penetrates each private clinic or treatment room.

Khun Poompong said that he worked with a design company in Bangkok to create what he refers to as “treatment in the garden”.“We want our patients to feel as relaxed as possible when they visit a dentist,” Khun Poompong explained. “Each treatment room is designed so that guests are close to and can enjoy the green scenery. We find that it helps to reduce tension or worry on the part of the patient, and our dentists, too, feel more relaxed and less tense when treating customers”.

The design of the building is modern, simple and very trendy. The equipment used inside is the very latest, said Doctor Ratchda Limwattanapornchai. “Take the new X-ray machine, for example. It’s entirely digital – it uses no film, which makes it more environment-friendly. The technology also reduces the patients’ exposure to X-rays by as much as 70%.” Khun Poompong added, “At Med Park we have invested in the very latest technology in order to raise medical standards to compete with any country in the world.”
The park is schedule to open fully in the coming high tourism season.

The Aquaminium at Royal Phuket Marina

Niran Kalayanimit & Gulu Lalvani

Following the successful sale of all 66 luxury condos and penthouses in Phase 1, Royal Phuket Marina (RPM) has broken ground on Phase 2 and has announced the sale of 15 ‘Aquaminiums’ – condominium units with private drive-in boat berths and doorstep moorings.

In early August, RPM Chairman Gulu Lalvani told the Governor of Phuket, Niran Kalayanimit, and other guests invited to the ground-breaking, “Royal Phuket Marina’s Aquaminium is a pioneering concept and one of the world’s first condominiums to feature private boat berths within the residence itself.”

Phase 2 will comprise three buildings, offering investors a variety of unit types including duplex and triplex penthouses, and two- and three-bedroom condominiums.

Construction site

Design is by Palmer and Turner Hong Kong, who have in the past worked on such Hong Kong icons as CITIC Tower, Exchange Square, and the Harbourside, while interiors are by renowned interior design specialists dwp cityscape, who have worked on such projects as Gaysorn Plaza in Bangkok and the Evason Spa in Hua Hin.

Mr Lalvani added that, by the end of this year, RPM will have four restaurants, a fitness center and two tennis courts. The marina has also been chosen as this year’s venue for the annual Phuket International Marina Expo (PIMEX) from December 6 to 9.

Work begins on The Yamu

Brahmin ceremony

Work officially began on Phuket’s newest luxury hotel, The Yamu, on August 8 with a Brahmin ceremony aimed at ensuring fast growth and a widespread reputation. The Yamu, scheduled to soft-open in about a year’s time, is expected to set new benchmarks in the hotel business.

In his welcome speech, Ian Henry, CEO of The Yamu Ltd, said “Finally…the east coast [of Phuket] is receiving the recognition it so richly deserves. Recognition for its gorgeous scenery, for the easy access it gives to the dozens of beautiful islands in Phang Nga Bay – the best marine playground in the world – and for its welcoming people.”

Creation of The Yamu has brought together three world-renowned people: French über-designer Philippe Starck, celebrated Belgian architect Jean Michel Gathy, and Adrian Zecha, founder and principal of Aman Resorts, whose company, GHM, will manage the resort.
The Yamu will have 63 large guest rooms, including two duplexes, a 160-seat restaurant serving Thai, Western, Chinese and Japanese cuisine, a state-of-the-art recording studio, a wine room, a cigar room, a chocolate room and a private marina.

Evason Hideaway set to open

Pool Villa Suite – Evason Hideaway

October 1 will see the arrival of latest addition to the Six Senses family in the Andaman Sea area, with the official opening of the Evason Hideaway on Koh Yao Noi, in the middle of Phang Nga Bay.

The resort has 56 private pool villas in three styles, hidden among natural vegetation enhanced with tropical landscaping. The design and material selection has been based on Evason’s well established commitment to protecting the environment.

Some of the villas have personal spa suites. For the remainder of the guests, there is the resort’s spa, styled after an Asian long-house, which nestles in the lush forested hillside. Here, skilled therapists create sensory journeys for guests with a range of holistic wellness and relaxation treatments.

There is a variety of dining options with cuisine from around the world, and all the villas are served by butlers.

The resort can be reached in 40 minutes by powerboat from Phuket, or in 10 minutes by helicopter from Phuket International Airport.
