Dining at Royale Nam Tok in Kathu is one of Phuket’s most singular experiences. This is because during the day the restaurant is the owners’ house. It flips into its role as a fine-dining experience at precisely 17:00 every day except Sundays.

The owners in question are Corry Ringoet and Marc De Schriyver, a Belgium partnership who, after having enjoyed 20 years’ success in their Antwerp restaurant De Tafeljoncker, moved to Phuket, built a house, installed a professional kitchen and opened their doors.

Where Is Royale Nam Tok?

Royale Nam Tok is located in Kathu in the centre of Phuket Island. Follow the signage to Kathu Waterfall (‘nam tok’ in Thai) and drive past the garish Palazzo dinner show ‘tent’ and the Phuket Cable Ski lake, follow the sign to the right and hey presto, you’re there.


Corry and Marc shipped the entire contents of their previous restaurant all the way from Belgium to Phuket in three shipping containers and the result is simply stunning.

An ancient harmonium sits in the ‘living room’ while Flemish period pieces and oil paintings are dotted around, creating a bizarre yet agreeable otherworldly effect. Corry calls it ‘chic-kitsch’ and it’s this that sets this restaurant apart.


Seeing that on a normal night there are only two people serving it’s suitably tranquil and personal at Royale Nam Tok. The music is discreet, the lighting just right and the place is large enough for almost complete privacy if you so desire.

There is fan-cooled dining inside along with poolside tables and chairs for those who prefer al fresco dining.


A large selection of old and new world labels at reasonable prices shows Corry’s taste in wine is as versatile as it is knowledgeable.

Given the selection available it’s safe to say that there’s something for everyone here at Royale Nam Tok.


The cuisine here is predominantly Hi-So French with tinges of Asian fusion. There’s delicious beef carpaccio with homemade pesto sauce, toasted Swiss Gruyere, andives with Madras curry and homemade whole-wheat bread with rilettes de canard for starters. Canadian lobster along with homemade duck terrine served with homemade passion fruit marmalade is impressive.

Mains come in the form of parrot fish in saffron sauce and a Black Angus beef steak followed by a cheese trolley and raspberry sorbet. These are set dishes but the restaurant also has an a-la-carte menu to choose from.


Corry does an excellent job of explaining dishes, pairing wines and making sure that diners have a gourmet experience.
