Salvatore's Restaurant Patong

Patong Beach - Phuket

Life goes round in circles, or so it seems. Several years ago Salvatore Cossu moved his restaurant from Patong to Phuket where it prospered. Now he has opened a new branch in Patong again, dividing his time between the two restaurants. Well known on the island, Salvatore has that rare combination of talent and humility that adds up to an extremely likeable personality and a good host.

Sardinian by birth, his cuisine features lots of meat, wonderfully rich combinations of vegetables and olive oil and great wines. Salvatore’s Patong is certainly one of the best Italian restaurants in town.

Where is It?

Salvatore's Patong

Nestled between Simon Cabaret and Phuket Palace, Salvatore’s is situated in the Mermaid Boutique Resort in the south of Patong. This is the road to take from Patong to Karon and Kata beaches.

Look for the large green sign on the right-hand side of the road. There is plenty of parking available.

Décor

"A smart dining place"

Very tasteful. With wooden floors, black and red seating, red tubular lighting, floor-to-ceiling sectioned windows with views out over lush gardens and crisp-white tablecloths, Salvatore’s is a smart dining place.

Behind the colourful bar is a matt-grey wall with the daily specials chalked up on blackboards. The wait staff wears brown, almost khaki uniforms that fit well with the understated décor.

Atmosphere

Modern and calm

The evening starts with Italian music played at barely audible level and progresses to Paulo Conte and a sprinkling of Sergio Leone themes. It’s all very calm and collected with extremely discreet service.

Even though the lights are slightly dimmed later on in the evening this is not the most romantic of locations but it is, however, light years from all the deep gloom and almost blackout that ‘fashionable’ restaurants insist upon lately. It actually makes a welcome change to be able to read the menu without the aid of a torch…

Wine

Walk-in wine cellar

Salvatore has always shown excellent taste when it come to choosing good Italian wines. The restaurant features a walk-in wine cellar with 31 labels and a generous selection of labels from regions around Italy and the New World – all cooled to perfection.

We drink a Beneventano Aglianico red and it is smooth, full bodied, almost liquid velvet. Salavatore’s also offers decanted, very reasonably house red and white in a carafe.

Food

Fileto di manzo con fegato d’oca

Salvatore has quite a fan base in Phuket for his superbly prepared and presented food. The robust antipasti plate consists of sun-dried tomatoes, Parma ham, salami, mortadella, black and green olives, mozzarella and peperino with terrific freshly baked bread.

For pasta we have a superbly al dente and flavoursome spaghetti carbonara and for mains a fileto di manzo con fegato d’oca which translates as a steak filet with goose foie gras. This is served with steamed asparagus and ‘nail’ mushrooms.

The food is full bodied and no-nonsense stuff with vigorous flavours and well-defined texture. Unpretentious to the extreme, this is the real stuff with no nouvelle cuisine airs and graces; genuine Italian ‘cucina’.

Service

Quiet, unobtrusive and professional. Expect professional treatment at the hands of well-trained wait staff.
