Sam’s Steak & Grill is one of the most reliable restaurants for those looking for unpretentious yet quality dining in Patong. Located in Patong’s Holiday Inn, this opulent restaurant delivers the goods in style: classy décor, refined ambience, delicious cuisine and impeccable service; you can't go wrong at Sam's Steak & Grill.
Basically, Sam’s is divided into an open-air dining area and a rather more intimate lounge, separated by a glass-walled wine cellar. Overall, Sam’s seats 50 diners, so it never becomes frenetic. Besides, the constant and agreeable piped-in music helps keep things calm.
We dine in the more intimate section, a room decorated with all sorts and shapes of mirrors and with Mr. Miles Davis providing the musical backdrop and a drop or two of Australian white wine, the evening starts admirably with a complimentary scotch egg – a quail egg in fact.
Next up, we sample pan-fried scallops with cauliflower purée, roasted pear veloute and sweet raisin vinaigrette which is pretty fabulous and a highly successful marriage of texture and taste. Behind us, the see-through wine ‘cellar’ is packed with high-quality labels from all round the world – each capable of complementing the wide-ranging choice of dishes at Sam’s – dishes such as pappardelle with green olive and mushroom paste in a three-cheese cream sauce.
The choice of tipple with this rich and filling dish is a Katnoook ‘Founder’s Block’ Chardonnay – an ice-cold Australian white that works well with the cream sauce.
But what about the steaks at Sam’s? Well, how does a fillet mignon with fondant potatoes, grilled mushrooms, garlic-braised broccoli and mushroom wine sauce sound to you? It got even better when paired with a lusty red from the Katnook estate.
Prices at Sam's aren't exactly cheap but for the quality on offer on the whole they're quite balanced: For example a 450gr fillet Wellington for two along with pate de foie gras is in the region of 1,500 baht while beef fillet Stroganof in mushroom sauce on egg noodles topped with sour cream is 660 baht.
Let’s be clear; this is fine dining without the boring pretentiousness often associated with it. Sam’s has a well-deserved reputation for delivering high-quality products at reasonable prices. It doesn’t pretend the be the ‘best’ of anything but the combination of great (and humorous) service, luxurious décor and design, excellent culinary skills, coupled with Thai hospitality easily catapults it into the higher-end restaurant category on the island, and rightly so.
Well, as they say, ‘all good things come to an end’ but not, in our case, before a sensational warm chocolate lava cake with a compote of dried fruits. In my book Sam’s is one of the most dependable and reliable restaurants for those looking for unpretentious yet quality dining in Patong.
