    Surin Beach Restaurants & Dining

    Taste Restaurant is right on Surin Beach and it’s a lovely place to be at sunset. Taste serves ‘Thai-inspired’ cuisine in a pleasant setting augmented by clever design and genial staff members but what really makes the place stand out is the partnership of Jade Lama and Martin Ostlind who run the place and give it a personal and genial touch.

    The covered and al-fresco restaurant has an overall 135-seat capacity and a tangible beachside feel to it with waves crashing to the shore mere metres away.

    Where Is It?

    Head down to the municipal car park (‘tii jot rot’ in Thai) on Surin Beach and walk 60 metres to the left along the beachside path. Taste in fact spans both sides of the path with the indoors section to the left and its al-fresco part on the right.

    Décor

    A light-cream-white theme runs throughout, counterpointed by dark wood table and chair legs, tasteful wall paintings and a fully fledged art gallery to one side where Jade pursues her love of creativity and Nepalese artifacts.

    The centrally placed bar brings focus to the restaurant and of course the western-facing open side allows diners to take in the beach sights and sounds outside. Ceiling and floor fans keep things cool.

    Atmosphere

    First off, it has to be said that Martin’s selection of prerecorded music is one of the best around, with acoustic versions of REM, Nellie Furtado, Sarah McLachlan and of course the main staple of any beach business – good old Jack Johnston.

    The combination of Taste’s excellent cocktails, great musical wallpaper and a setting sun on the sea is nothing short of sublime. Taste is equally a tourist and local restaurant and sitting outside to dine is an archetypical beachside experience not to be missed.

    Wine

    With a 43 + label wine list there’s just about something for everyone here. The list isn’t cheap but attention to detail is evident as the labels are correctly chilled and served by knowledgeable wait staff.

    The choice is wide and eclectic ranging from an unpretentious Chilean Concha y Toro to classy North American, Italian and Australian labels.

    Food

    Swedish Executive Chef Martin is nothing if not creative in the kitchen. A favourite with regular diners, seared sashimi-grade blackened tuna with wasabi aioli is a fine appetiser, as are the shockingly tasty Maryland crab cakes with dill aioli as well as baked shrimps with baked garlic, parsley, olive oil and bread.

    Martin is influenced by the Thai way of approaching food preparation so all ingredients are spanking fresh. We order western dishes as mains; fish and chips and beach burger and chips and after such rich starters we struggle with the impressively generous portions. Top marks for freshness, presentation and tasty food. Taste is aptly named.

    Service

    The uniformed wait staff is well trained and cheerful and the winning team of Martin and Jade really does give the place a welcoming feel.
