If you enjoy dining amid the breezy hustle and bustle of beach life while watching the world go by then Terrazzo in Patong is just for you. The restaurant is lively, busy and interesting and serves up unpretentious Italian dishes; in short, it's the ideal post-beach eatery.
Pretty much every restaurant in Patong has to be adaptable in order to handle holidaymakers' eclectic tastes and Terrazzo is no exception in that, although it's an Italian eatery – and a good one at that – it also offers various dishes to please every taste.
Where Is It?
Terrazzo is the 'face' of the Holiday Inn on Patong's Beach Road. If you are driving, go down Ruamjai Road and park on the grounds of Holiday Inn then walk through the hotel towards the sea.
With plenty of orange tablecloths and napkins, exterior wooden deck floors and eclectic lighting, Terrazzo is a colourful place. A nice touch is the table lighting arrangement that looks exactly like a candle but on closer inspection turns out to be an electric lamp.
To one side stands an open kitchen with a wood-fired oven which means that delicious and appetizing aromas drift through the night air.
Half of Terrazzo is inside, half al fresco with plenty of fan and breeze ventilation throughout.
If you had to choose one word only to describe Terrazzo's atmosphere it would be 'beach'. The dress code here is quite relaxed so shorts and sandals are acceptable.
Terrazzo is a busy place and staff members have to move quite quickly to keep up with the many orders. Still, it's not outright chaos and is a fun and lively place to be. Think predominantly Italian with a sea breeze by a busy road and you'll get the picture.
As in its sister restaurant, Sam's Steaks & Grill in the Holiday Inn, Terrazzo's music has been preprogrammed to match the time of evening and the subsequent range of style and content is impressive.
Terrazzo's bar is a popular hangout along Patong's Beach Road and a great place to unwind with a beer, cocktail or a glass of wine.
As to be expected at a well-organised hotel such as the Holiday Inn, the wine list is well planned with a brief list of New World labels.
We order De Bortoli Australian rosé by the glass and, as robust as it is, it handles the rich Italian fare confidently.
The house red, an Umbrian Rosso Montepulciano, is also worth trying.
Along with Terrazzo's bustle, the bistro-like atmosphere and the constant flow of passers by comes really great fresh food. Our quattro stagioni wood-fired oven pizza is crispy, tasty and almost a work of art.
An absolutely huge mixed salad accompanies this along with balsamic dressing and this alone could have sufficed for a meal in itself but beef carpaccio on a bed of rocket salad is a welcome and very tasty addition.
For mains, another pizza – this time a rather unusual chicken tandoori with mango slices – lends its exotic presence while a decidedly creamy lasagne verde tops things off nicely.
This is excellent stuff and most of all it is achingly fresh, produced by a team of cheerful chefs mere metres away.
You've got to hand it to the team at Terrazzo; they handle haute service with a smile on their face and a spring in their step and of course credit is due to those hard workers in the open kitchen. Excellent stuff.
