Vijitt Resort Review
Chalong - Phuket
Phuket is best known for its host of west coast resorts – most featuring views out over the Andaman Sea with stunning sunset vistas. But what about the island's east coast? In Rawai, at the foot of the island, a prime accommodation choice is the Vijitt Resort – a 92-villa, 18-acre project straddling a hillside and reaching down to Friendship Beach.
The resort is the very essence of peacefulness and with cooling breezes wafting through the spacious grounds it really is a pleasant place to be.
What's It Like?
At first glance Vijitt seems a maze of never-ending and twisting paths that lead past villa after villa. But after a pause for orientation and a resolve not to call for a hotel buggy every time an outside trip is needed the resort begins to reveal itself.
From the circular hilltop lobby down to the 40-metre beachside infinity pool it is only a five-minute walk, taking in the kid's club and gymnasium along the way. White-clad staff members, clever landscaping and atmospheric architecture add to the already natural elegance of the location.
Where Is It?
Near Rawai, at the southern heel of Phuket Island. The Vijitt property starts on the crest of a hill and sweeps down to the shallow-water beach, taking in views over Chalong Bay and nearby Lone Island.
Chalong, a busy port town, is seven kilometres north and Rawai itself one-and-a-half kilometres south while Phuket International Airport a 50-minute drive and Patong a 25-minute jaunt away.
Because of its east coast location Vijitt is pleasantly quiet and a world away from the brashness of Patong. See a location map...
How Many Villas?
The 92 stand-alone villas themselves are attractive and spacious and come in four types – Deluxe Villas (70sqm), Prime Pool Villas (178sqm), Two-Bedroom Pool Villas (182sqm) and Vijitt Pool Villas (162sqm). All villas have full or partial sea views.
Room Facilities
Our two-bedroom Pool Villa features a host of facilities such as a generous infinity pool with a wooden sunbathing balcony, good views out over the grounds and the sea, a one-person Jacuzzi, walk-in shower, separate toilet, double sinks, good and varied working space with a plug-in internet connection, king-sized bed in the main bedroom with two singles in the outer bedroom, DVD players and 32" multi-channel TVs in both rooms with overhead fans and air conditioning.
The décor is leaning towards minimalist with off-white walls set against dark-stained wooden fixtures and additions, louvered fold-aside doors to the main bedroom, a lounge area with an L-shaped sofa and plenty of cushions.
At 182sqm with two separate bedrooms (not attached) and a living space as well as two separate bathrooms there really is enough space for a largish family here and with the excellent amenities this could easily be home away from home.
While not completely walled in, ultimate privacy is obtained through light and heavy curtains, a garden wall and gate and eastern-facing windows and pool. A well-stocked mini-bar rounds things off nicely and the villa is located halfway up the hill, meaning equal access to the lobby and restaurant/pool/bar.
The Deluxe Villas, while having no private pool, feature beautifully roomy bathrooms (with an outside shower) and extremely appealing décor.
Restaurants
Savoury is the resort's flagship restaurant and also its buffet breakfast venue. With live music in the evenings and Sunday brunches it is multifunctional and a very convivial place to be with views out over the swimming pool and the bay.
The restaurant also has an adjacent air-conditioned and well-stocked wine 'cellar' as well as a delicatessen. Baan Vijitt, the original owners' Sino-Portuguese weekend family home near the shoreline has been converted into a Thai restaurant serving traditional Siamese fare.
For those who enjoy an afternoon drink by the pool, Savoury has a beach bar attached and full room service is also available.
Resort Facilities
Apart from the 40-metre swimming pool by the beach, Vijitt also has a smaller one at the Rotunda – a building housing the gymnasium, steam room and Kid's Club. The fully-equipped Kid's Club has a policy of encouraging parents to participate and indeed there are several adult programs such as aqua aerobics and market shopping as well as kite surfing, horse riding and kayaking.
Also available are yoga, massage and flower-arranging classes. Near the lobby the V Spa is world class and has four executive double treatment rooms with private Jacuzzis and four outside 'salas' for Thai massage along with panoramic views over the property.
V Spa has separate male and female steam rooms and refreshments are included in all programs. For those who prefer not to tackle the resort's gradients, several electric chauffeured buggies are just a phone call away.
Business Facilities
Vijitt has an internet workstation in the lobby with WiFi throughout the grounds and meeting facilities in the Rotunda.
Overall
Vijitt is a good-looking resort in an attractive and peaceful part of Phuket. In every part of the grounds guests can hear and see running water.
It is not a walled-off community of villas yet still boasts intimacy and the design is classically based but executed with modernity in mind.
The location is advantageous for those who are looking for an undisturbed holiday with the option of visiting the island's more touristy destinations.
