    Kalim Beach Restaurants & Dining

Restaurants that offer actual beachside dining along Phuket’s west coast belong to an exclusive and select group. After all, there are so few of them. One such establishment is White Box, on Kalim Beach.

Ever since its conception, the name White Box has been inextricably linked with chic parties, exotic cocktails, famous DJ’s and hi-so gatherings and, no less importantly, it has built itself a formidable reputation as a high-class dining location.

  • Where Is It?

White Box couldn’t be easier to find. Follow the Beach Road north out of Patong and drive for one-and-a-half kilometres towards Kamala Beach.

Just before the road rises into the hillside, voila… the large white cubic building on your left is none other than White Box.

White Box is split level with a white minimalist leitmotif running through it. Its upstairs, artfully lit bar looks over the huge granite rocks on which the restaurant is built.

The previously private house in which the restaurant is located has an Escher-esque quality to it as rooms seem to lead into others on different levels, much like the Dutch artist portrayed life in his surrealistic drawings.

Downstairs features alfresco and air-conditioned dining spaces. The outside space features wooden plank flooring, drop-down awnings and the white furniture is highlighted by bead lighting. It’s all very tasteful; and of course there’s the beach down below.

The upstairs rooftop and lounge is a fine place to party and the atmosphere is tangible as soon as you walk in. Trip-hop pours out of the speakers, white-clad wait staff members waste no time in rustling up a cocktail and while the sun is settling into the sea, way down the shoreline the lights of Patong twinkle and blink.

Things are a little more sedate for dinner when the intimacy of the place starts to come out; the music’s softer, the sea a little closer, and the atmosphere more of an out-and-out restaurant.

There’s nothing clunky about this place – White Box’s atmosphere is welcoming in a highly professional way.

With more than 150 labels from all over the world, you’re more than looked after when it comes to happy juice at White Box.

Our Ruffino Rosa Di Ninta VDT 2005 is beautifully clear, has strong legs and is chilled to perfection. With the oldest wine (a Chateau Calon Segur St Estephe) dating back to 1996 and a good portion of the rest from the 2004-2008 period, the list here is predominantly young and this suits the image of the place.

Prices range between 1,500 and 20,000 baht and it’s good to notice that these are net prices – this applies to the food too – so you get what’s on the label here. Go down to the comprehensively laid out wine cellar and choose your own bottle.

To keep up with the racy image of this restaurant the food has to be top notch and White Box doesn’t disappoint in this department with an extensive ‘Mediterranean Asean’ choice of dishes.

Wagyu beef carpaccio with black truffle oil is sensationally fresh and tasty while a tuna tartar with sesame oil, avocado and tomato is certainly a substantial starter.

For mains we sample marinated grilled red tuna with mashed potatoes, wasabi and cherry tomatoes with a mixed herbs dressing and a truly divine steamed snow fish with shitake mashed potatoes, mussels in a porcini and saffron cream sauce with clams.

This is highly recommendable fare and is an experience not to be missed, what with a fabulous setting and an undeniably exclusive feel to the location.

    Signature dishes

    • Veal Saltimboca
    • Stir-fried soft shell crab
    • Steamed snow fish
    • Wagyu Beef carpaccio

Again, White Box does not disappoint and the service is exemplary.  With smart white uniforms and good spoken English, the wait staff complements the restaurant perfectly.
