Carefully planning your first time in Mai Khao is extremely important. As Phuket’s biggest beach, the good bits are very widely spaced. Picking a hotel in the wrong place could make for a lot of inconvenience. On the other hand, with so much free space, this beautiful part of the island is home to some of its largest resorts. If you're looking for peace and quiet and a nice beach holiday, you'll find it in spades on Mai Khao Beach!
With relatively few things to see and do in the area, our Mai Khao survival guide could be the difference between a good holiday and a great one. Being the beach closest to the airport, this is probably the best place for those looking to go straight from travelling to relaxing. It's also very convenient for those who want to visit the stunning Phang Nga Bay, just a short drive to the north.
Mai Khao Beach at a Glance
Mai Khao Beach is the single longest strip of sand in Phuket – a whopping 11 km long! That's so long that, standing at one end of it, the other end is below the horizon and out of sight. With some of the area protected by National Park status, it's a beautiful place and especially great for those looking to get away from it all. The one downside is that you really do get away from almost everything, and your choice of things to see and do is really limited.
The choice of things to do in Mai Khao Beach is quite limited. However, the few attractions in the area are quite unique and interesting, especially for families. For one thing, the area is home to Phuket's premiere water park. Beyond that and a few other smaller activity centres, there isn't that much to do in Mai Khao. The area's natural beauty makes it a peaceful retreat, rather than a place of distractions. If you are planning your first time in Mai Khao, these are the more interesting attractions to look out for.

If you're planning your first time in Mai Khao, these are the dining experiences which you shouldn't miss: one with an amazing location, another serving great local food and a third right by the beach.

There are some great budget choices available, though these are often away from the sand. The following are the Mai Khao hotels we recommend to our friends and family, with a choice each for different budget levels.
