Fashion from Thailand, particularly Bangkok, has already proven
a hit on a global scale for a number of years now. It is little
known however that Phuket Island too, is fast developing in this
field. Currently the island is going through a creative transformation
and this is influencing all areas of art, be it fashion, photography,
painting, sculpture, design or architecture.
Up until recently most of the fashion designers were based in Bangkok
as were all the modelling agencies. Now, however, fashion designers
from throughout Thailand and other countries have started coming
to Phuket. Many of these designers have begun to incorporate local
influences into their creations and are making Phuket their base.
Seeing a need for a modelling agency here on Phuket, Ann Hanson,
started Angel Model, three years ago to support her already successful,
events company. More recently she formed a new company, "Vision
Model + Events". To this day it is still the islands only modelling
agency. With already filling appointment books, the company is obviously
off to a good start. From catwalk modelling to models used in commercial
shoots, fashion has truly arrived in Phuket and local designs are
now readily available for all markets.
Patong well known for its fashion flair has its own lingerie fashion
house and there are already plans in the pipeline for more sophisticated
designer gear from haute couture to swimwear. One spot to view the
current Phuket trends is to pop down to the opening of the new Jongceylon
Shopping Resort located in Patong. Local gossip tells us that once
open, this will offer a big boost for the fashion industry as it
is expected to expose the latest in Thai designs to the tourist,
expatriate and local markets.
