Bampot Kitchen & Bar is a Modern European restaurant that takes inspiration from the culinary scene across Europe to create unique dishes. Using the finest local and imported ingredients, the menu presented here could grace any haute cuisine restaurant, but Bampot Kitchen & Bar does away with any stuffiness or pretence, choosing instead a casual, fun and friendly environment. Found at the entrance to the Laguna resort area of Bangtao Beach, it offers a culinary journey from fruity aperitifs to sublime desserts.

Easily confused for a Thai word, Bampot Kitchen & Bar actually takes the first part of its name from the Scottish slang term for ‘crazy person’. The second part comes from the fact that, as you enter, you will find a counter running down the left of the 44-seat room. Here you will see the bar and then the open kitchen, both of which have extremely capable individuals behind them.
At the bar, you’ll find ‘Spooks’ – the ‘bar chef’ and everybody’s best friend, especially once you’ve tried one or two of his remarkable concoctions, such as the tangy Magosteenelini (gin, mangosteen, chocolate liqueur, spiced bitters, soda, topped off with a chilli for added bite). The well-stocked bar has all of the ingredients required for the well-known traditional beverages, but leaving your choice to the master is highly recommended. Prices are around 250 baht per cocktail.
The clipboard-style menu, coupled with the little addendum of “v 1.0” on the front page (at time of writing), demonstrates how the repertoire at Bampot Kitchen & Bar is an adaptable and evolving one, changing every so often to bring in new and interesting options. The menu is relatively short, but very varied.
There are 16 seats available outside, but those inside benefit from custom-made furnishings and artworks amongst modern industrial décor. You can also enjoy watching head chef and partner, Jamie at work behind the second half of the counter as he prepares such delights as pork and foie gras frit, beer can chicken, and the range of high-quality imported cheeses. It is not easy to find such a degree of creativity and intricacy in Thailand outside of the five-star eateries of Bangkok, nor is it that easy to find artisanal cheese. The twists and reinterpretations of simple foods makes the menu a bit of an adventure in experimentation while the relaxed bistro atmosphere makes such an adventure more approachable, even for those who may not consider themselves ‘foodies’.
We highly recommend the asparagus and broad bean risotto (450 baht) for its cunning blend of subtle flavours, the pork belly with bean ragu and red pepper (600 baht) for meat so tender that it genuinely feels like it is melting in your mouth, and the truly outstanding deconstructed lime cheesecake (250 baht), which will leave you utterly speechless with its assault of sharp yet complementing tastes. The focus on fine food in a casual and friendly environment makes Bampot Kitchen & Bar a great place to really enjoy a meal.
