Belgian Beer Café at Graceland Resort Phuket
Patong Restaurants & Dining
The Belgian Beer Café, located in the grounds of Phuket Graceland Resort & Spa, could be described in various ways: a large bar with a good restaurant, a unique restobar or a full-scale replica of a genuine Belgian bistro.
Exclusively serving Belgian dishes and with a beer selection that would be the envy of most Brussels-based bars, things most certainly are not done by halves here.
The café has imported absolutely everything from Belgium, right down to the wooden flooring, bar, tables, chairs, decorative items, beer mats and glassware – in fact there’s nothing here that wasn’t shipped in a crate to Thailand except perhaps the wait staff. Fitted out in handsome dark wood with inside seating for up to 200, the polished bar surfaces, spherical bar lighting and whimsical fittings set the European mood, along with black-and-white period framed photographs, antique school satchels and valises, tin-plate beer adverts as well as Flemish-style pots and pans.
The bar area features wooden high barstools and an adjacent drinking corner with a large flat-screen TV. Belgian Beer Café also has two options of al-fresco seating; out front next to Patong’s Beach Road on attractive wooden decking are tables with comfortable rattan chairs while to the side of the café by the hotel’s swimming pool the seating arrangements are more modernistic. You can catch live music on the terrace from 18:00 – 23:00 nightly and, of course the spectacular Patong sunset.
Belgian beer has long and rightly been celebrated by connoisseurs as one of the world’s best and it is represented in high style with an extensive range of specialty beers. Amongst the many bottled treats on offer are Trappist, Westmalle, Rochefort, Orval, Duval, La Chouffe, Sweet and Cider Beer, Chimay, and Pauwel Kwak (with its quirky serving glass).
As for draught beer, Stella Artois, Leffe and both light and dark Hoegaarden are served on tap. Only the devilishly named Delirium Nocturnum hints at the strength of these beers but you’ll have to watch your step after sampling a few glasses – the alcohol percentage in these tipples can be as high as a staggering 11%! A nice touch is that each beer is served in its brand-name signature glass along with its matching beer mat.
To complement these delicious beers you can order from a comprehensive menu that includes leek quiche, Chimay-style abbey cheese croquets, steak tartar on toast, an assorted charcuterie and cheese board, beef carpaccio and Brussels pudding… but no Brussels sprouts, to the relief of many, no doubt. Belgian chocolate is as excellent as its beer so do try to find room for the house Belgian chocolate mousse made from Callebaut chocolate.
This café is atmospheric by day but comes into its own at night when the bistro-style house lights come on. With a plate of steamed mussels in front of you and a glass of Duval to hand you’ll experience the real Belgium in the heart of Phuket.
