Mama and Black Pearl Restaurants are now permanently closed.
Mama restaurant is set in a long open-sided one storey building. Enjoying a prime location on the shore of Karon Lake (a.k.a. Nong Harn Lake) near the northern end of Karon Beach (on the road to Patong Beach), this tourist-oriented contemporary style venue serves international and Thai favourites at reasonable prices.
The view to the Northeast over the lake and the mountains in the background is superb. At dusk, when things cool down a bit, it is a great place indeed to enjoy a cocktail in good company before dinner. Opened in December 2013 under Sugar Marina Group Management (which also run Sugar Marina Resort - Art in Karon and Sugar Marina Resort - Fashion in Kata), these restaurants are stylish yet unpretentious.
Black Pearl and Mama Restaurants (plus Moken Bar, which is planned to open for end 2014) are set in a corridor-like building that covers a 1,600sqm area (80x20m) on the side of Karon Lake. Featuring buffed-concrete flooring and a pergola style roof, the main dining area can host up to 145 guests in total. Most of the wooden tables and chairs (with black or white table cloth according to the restaurant they belong to) offer a great view to the lake.
Both restaurants also have slightly more private dining rooms/areas at their backside, including a comfortable and nicely decorated air-conditioned dining room – named Mama Collection – on the Mama Restaurant’s side; quirkily enough, a genuine red English telephone booth is installed in front of Mama Collection.
Despite the fact that Sugar Marina Group would like to promote Black Pearl as an international and fusion Thai restaurant, and Mama as a local cuisine restaurant, it is a bit difficult to see the difference as both of them share the exact same menu with different front covers. The menu, with its 30 pages, is quite imposing. Written in English, Russian, and Thai, it is indeed an ode to globalisation as the most famous cuisines of the world are represented in it: from Italian bruschetta (130 baht), pizzas (200 baht) and lasagna (160 baht) to French onion soup (110 baht) and bisque de homard (lobster bisque – 110 baht) to North American hamburger (150 baht) to English fish & chips (190 baht) to Scandinavian baked meat ball (150 baht), there is truly something for everyone.
With 14 pages dedicated to them, the Thai and seafood sections of the menu remain the largest ones. You find here all the Thai and local cuisine favourites: crabmeat curry with khanom jeen (370 baht), Phuket style sweet pork braised with soy sauce (180 baht), deep-fried sea bass topped with fish sauce (70 baht per 100g), tom yam kung (180 baht), fried-rice served in a pineapple (150 baht), and more. As most of the customers are from abroad, Thai food may taste slightly bland to people used to spicy food, so if you like it hot, do not hesitate to mention it when ordering.
On the whole, Black Pearl & Mama Restaurants are both great places to spend a relaxing end of afternoon and enjoy a decent and affordable dinner in Karon Beach. Please note that Black Pearl and Mama also have branches in Kata’s Soi Sugar Palm.
