Black Rock Viewpoint in Phuket

Challenging Hike to a Barely Known Phuket Viewpoint

Black Rock Viewpoint, known as Pa Hin Dam in Thai, is challenging to get to, but certainly worth the effort. Totally unknown before 2016, it is located high up in the rainforest above Ao Sane, and it offers a stunning view to the south of Phuket, including Nai Harn Beach, Promthep Cape and Koh Man.

Black Rock Viewpoint looks like a large terrace made of soil with its front side, above the cliff, featuring a huge black granitic stone – hence its name. The outstanding view and the remoteness of the place – “you’re in the jungle, baby” – gives you a great rewarding feeling due to the difficulty to get there.

Getting to Black Rock View Point

To get there, take the trail that leads to Nui Beach. It starts a few hundred metres to the right after Karon Viewpoint when heading south toward Rawai/Nai Harn. Unless you ride a real off-road motorcycle, you’ll have to leave your bike at the parking lot at which the Nui Beach truck’s driver waits to transfer beachgoers.

Two trails leave from the parking lot; one going down to Nui Beach in front of you, and one going up to the left. The latter is the one you have to follow. Bring with you a bottle of water, some snacks and get ready for a one-kilometre steep hike. You have to turn right some 250 metres after the parking lot, then carry on for another 600 metres on this trail before to see the signboard that indicates the entrance of the small path – to your left - that meander through the jungle up to Black Rock Viewpoint.

Just a note: if you continue to walk on the main trail passed the path to the viewpoint, you’ll get to a beautiful cape named Laem Krating.
