Bliss Beach Club is now permanently closed. The site is now home to the new Catch Beach Club.
Bliss Beach Club, one of Phuket’s leading beach clubs, lies on gorgeous Bangtao Beach just south of Sunwing Resort & Spa. With modern lines, wide open spaces, refreshing breezes and a good menu and drinks list, Bliss lives up to its name and offers an almost perfect haven for the senses for all ages.
Outside, under the shade of palms and casuarina trees (spot lit at night), guests can chill out in ‘love loungers’ – relaxation sofas – and pull their chairs into a circle to enjoy an instant party.
Alternatively, the stylish vintage-with-modern interior with its unusual canvas ceiling fans, ‘street lamps’ on columns and walls and an impressive-looking teakwood bar stocked with every cocktail combination you can imagine, offers a more formal approach to beach relaxation – but only just a bit more. This is, after all, a place to come and relax.
Bliss also has a 140-label wine list and serves no less than 28 wines by the glass – aided by an ingenious rubber nozzle vacuum device that keeps the wine premium fresh for up to two weeks after opening. Bottles range from 1,300 baht to a purse-tickling 69,000 baht.
Once in a while, Bliss throws a party and when it does, it does so in style. The latest bash featured Boy George in his resurrected DJ role and was a smashing success.
But this beach club’s forté is in exploiting the universally loved themes of sun, sand, good music and excellent food and drink. Bliss’s Australian chef has previously worked for celebrity chef Neil Perry and as a result, hungry beach goers can tuck into eight different types of pizzas, six main dishes such as steak sandwiches, burgers, vegetable fettucine, stir-fried chicken and cashew nuts and Thailand’s most popular curry – massaman.
You’ll also find a well-stocked kids’ menu here that offers favourites such as spaghetti bolognaise, chicken fried rice and pizza. Speaking of kids, Bliss has see-saws and several large animals on which to play, to say nothing of Thailand’s only yellow swimming pool. And it’s good to know that parents can easily supervise their little ones from the wooden deck terrace.
A beach club wouldn’t be a beach club without cool sounds and Bliss delivers with a continuous preprogrammed flow of Duffy, bossanova, jazz guitar, crooners, all recorded by Bliss’s resident DJ.
And what of the food here? Well, the ‘Twins’ pizza (so-named after repeat twins guests) comprises a mozzarella-bacon-tomato-and-chopped basil topping and is delicious in a ‘simple is best’ way. Likewise sea bass with ratatouille and mashed potasto: there’s no butter in the mash and how the chef successfully brings out the flavours is beyond human ken. But for a final surprise we are served none other than chocolate-filled spring rolls… with chopped strawberries.
Bliss has put a lot of thought into its set up and with beach clubs popping up like mushrooms along Phuket’s coasts this is one of the best.
