Bodega & Grill at Angsana Laguna Phuket
Fine-Dining Grillhouse at Bangtao Beach0
Bodega and Grill is an attractive restaurant in the grounds of Angsana Laguna Phuket. It’s designed along classic lines with chequered marble floors, mirrored walls, a ‘wine cellar’ to the side, along with a retro-looking cocktail bar. Its air-conditioned interior has seating for around 30 diners with a large L-shaped outdoor dining space cooled by overhead, as well as quaint old-fashioned floor fans.
You can tell a lot about a restaurant simply by sampling its bread and sure enough, we’re served perfectly warm and crusty whole wheat bread, a slice of juicy fresh garlic bread and lots more besides. The background music at Bodega is Latina ballads and cantos and it’s all very tempting to bring out the castanets and enjoy a quick tango across the polished floor but thankfully the starters arrive to save the day.

Even though it’s technically a grill house, it’d be unfair to state purely that Bodega is solely for carnivores as the menu (one of the heaviest I’ve seen in many years – its covers are made of wood) has around 20 starters alone but I stay simple and stick to green salad, which may seem very unadventurous when you can sample exotica such as warm octopus salad with baby spinach, cherry tomatoes, egg mimosa and citrus dressing (480 baht) or culatello ham salad with roasted pumpkin, baby rocket salad, bocconcini cheese and garlic crostini (470 baht).
There are also 10 pasta and risotto choices at Bodega and Grill for those who enjoy a taste of Italy before their carne but the star act here is definitely the steaks, quite a few of which are Australian premium Wagyu beef. This particular cattle is grain-fed for 500 days in a similar manner as in Kobe, Japan, ensuring top quality. Only the top 5% of cattle in Australia fall into this category, meaning that the steaks at Bodega and Grill are some of Phuket’s best.
Great care is taken to ensure that diners get their steaks at exactly the right temperature and the menu offers six choices: blue (cold centre), rare, medium rare, medium pink, medium well, and well done. I choose a medium rare rib eye 339gm steak along with sautéed mushrooms and mashed potatoes and it really is a project in itself. It’s not often that I have tackled such a hunk of meat and halfway through it’s gotten the better of me. Delicious, tender, sumptuous and yielding it is but it’s also very filling. No wonder that the pot of postprandial green tea is much appreciated.
Other main courses to choose from include roasted pork belly stuffed with Portobello mushrooms, spinach, and stewed Borlotti beans; double-stewed beef cheek, wood-fired Tasmanian rack of lamb, and even Kiwi marinated ostrich steak. This is not bargain-basement stuff and even though prices include tax and service charge, Bodega & Grill is blow-out territory – a place to treat yourself on a special occasion.
