  • Chicroom Café in Phuket Town

Vintage-chic Restaurant & Coffee Shop in Phuket Old Town

Chicroom Café is a trendy new venue near Phuket Old Town on Phuket Road. Part of Quip Bed & Breakfast, this restaurant/coffee & cake shop has a retro look lending it a back-to-the ‘60s feel. Located on the banks of Phuket Canal, right next to Saphan Ha Ram (Ha Ram Bridge), Chicroom Café is a perfect place for a lunch break or afternoon tea while visiting the Sino-Portuguese district of Phuket Town.

With its central location and original décor, the restaurant serves Thai, Asian and Western food for breakfast, brunch and dinner. A long list of beverages, from coffee to tea to smoothies to cocktails and even Belgian beers cater to the thirsty and prices are slightly higher than standard Thai restaurants but remain affordable.

  • Viewed from Phuket Road, the building that houses Quip Bed & Breakfast and Chicroom Café looks like a Sino-Portuguese version of ‘50s Soviet architectural design: basically it’s a three-storey block of cement with arches covered with grey tiles and some touches of light green and yellow to enhance the mood.

The place seems stuck between the past, present and future. An automatic sliding door opens as soon as you approach the porch and you enter a large room in which stands a vintage gold car that turns out to be the hotel’s front desk! All this is complemented by an eclectic collection of objects and furniture from the past: TVs, marble basins, statues, old chairs and even an old Honda 70 Deluxe motorbike. No two sets of tables and chairs or sofas are the same; it’s a bit like having lunch in a classy junk shop except that there’s no dust. Nevertheless, the atmosphere is cool and trendy and it’s also a convenient place for a business meeting over a good cup of coffee.

A mix of western and Thai food is available on the not-so-user-friendly menu, printed out on a vertical notebook. American and English breakfasts (180 and 220 baht), plus a choice of sandwiches, baked potatoes and German sausages are served from 08:00 till 11:00. Brunch choices (120 baht) are exclusively Thai with three curry dishes – yellow, green and massaman; fried rice – chicken, salmon, prawns, and seafood; and fried pork with basil leaves and rice. Dinner choices include appetizers and salads from different sources, such as Thai, German and Japanese cuisine; there’s also spaghetti with a good range of accompaniments (180 baht), and enough main-course options to satisfy anyone, from salmon steak with white wine sauce (380 baht) to New Zealand mussels with spicy sauce (250 baht) to beef steak with red wine sauce (600 baht).

The drinks list is pretty long too, and caters for all times of day, with espresso and cappuccino among the dozen coffee choices available – hot or iced, while smoothies and fruit juices go well with a slice of cake in the afternoon. Five types of beer are available including delicious Belgian Hoegaarden (180 baht). The usual suspects feature for late evening drinking in the form of spirits and cocktails.

All in all, Chicroom Café is a nice place to hang out in, due to its cool location in the central part of Phuket Town and its decent and affordable food.
