Chomchan by One Chun Restaurant in Phuket Town is a classy establishment serving fine Thai cuisine at surprisingly reasonable prices given the extraordinary quality. It boasts friendly staff, some creative drinks and really tasty traditional dishes, served in airy, classically-styled dining room.
From the exterior, the restaurant is surprisingly modest. It is hidden a little back off the road, with lush gardens in front and only a small sign by the street to alert you to its presence. The charming green and white building is largely concealed behind a large leafy canopy, which gives you a cool, shaded approach to the main entrance. Inside, the green and white colour scheme continues across the colonial-style décor and furnishings, giving the place a look almost reminiscent of an English tea room.
The menu at Chomchan by One Chun Restaurant could barely be more Thai, however. The most popular dish, without a doubt, is that which made the sister establishment – One Chun Café & Restaurant in Phuket Old Town – so renowned: crabmeat curry in coconut milk (280 baht). It has a smooth flavour with just enough chilli to make your lips tingle without melting them, making it a very approachable and enjoyable option for both tourists and the local Thais who make up the majority of the customers.
We strongly recommend the fried shrimp topped with tamarind sauce (220 baht), which features four big and meaty prawns in a sweet and tangy sauce, with cashew nuts to add a bit of crunch. It can be a little fiddly to get the meat out of the shells without getting covered in the irresistible sauce, but it is more than worth it.
Other noteworthy offerings include orange curry fish (60 baht), spicy minced pork with vegetables (120 baht), red curry with roasted duck and coconut milk (180 baht) and, of course, the perennial local favourite: papaya salad (75 baht). There are no dishes costing more than 280 baht and the servings are quite generous, even at that low price.
The drinks at Chomchan by One Chun Restaurant are quite innovative, with fruit smoothies served in a wide bowl rather than a tall glass, helping the ice to melt at a more consistent rate. We also tried a quite remarkable lemon and butterfly pea drink. Presented in a tall glass, it is layered, with the sharp and bitter lemon at the bottom and the purple flower-based sweet butterfly pea at the top. Chomchan by One Chun Restaurant is located on Yaowarat Road, roughly halfway between Vachira Phuket Hospital and Bangkok Hospital Phuket. It is about 2km to the north of Phuket Old Town.
