Meat is King in South America. Almost every country near the Cordillera claims to have the best chicken, beef and pork and they all do excellent versions of their own speciality, but it is arguably Argentina which delivers the most succulent asados (so they should – it’s their national dish) and steaks. The old legend of the gauchos riding all day long with a steak under their saddle to tenderize it is actually true, if somewhat unhygienic (and not practiced in Phuket, fortunately).
In Latin America, a Churrascaria is a restaurant serving grilled meat while ‘Churrasco’ is a Portuguese and Spanish term meaning grilled meat in general. So there are no prizes for figuring out what is served up nightly at Churrasco, located in Jungceylon – Patong’s premium shopping mall.
Churrasco is not a large restaurant, although it does offer al-fresco dining as well as seating in an open-sided air-conditioned space with olive green, pastel red and white walls. Photos of fierce-looking Gauchos, boleros and prancing horses hang on one wall, with a board bearing dish suggestions on another. Background music is largely Latin American, with a fair share of guitar ballads that you’d hear live in Buenos Aires or Santiago de Chile. Located at the mouth of the eastern gate of Jungceylon, it’s a good place to watch the shoppers milling by.
We attack our first dish with relish – nachos with cheese (340 baht) – an absolute minefield of flavours and textures with accents of cumin and just enough piquancy to power it into true Latin territory. A tender Wagyu Top Tender Steak (from 650 baht) is next, done to perfection. This is accompanied by a baked potato in its skin with sour cream.
Churrasco Machoburger (490 baht) is perfectly named for a plate that’s a challenge to finish because of its sheer bulk. Make no mistake: Churrasco Phuket Steakhouse is a place for people who want – in fact, demand – their meat fix in a way that goes straight to the jugular. It has become famous for its wide range of Wagyu and Black Angus steaks from Australia, and many people keep coming back time after time for these excellent dishes.
There’s also a fine choice of happy juices at Churrasco, with mostly South American labels (both chilled and unchilled), along with a good Sangria and a robust cocktail list for those who prefer tequila with their T-bone.
