    CUT Grill & Lounge Phuket is an exceptionally high-quality steak restaurant on the lake at the back of Boat Avenue in Bangtao. The fact that it is also quite a classy lounge bar is an added bonus as the star of the show, as the name suggests, is undoubtedly the finest cuts of beef, lamb, pork and chicken, served with skill in a beautiful setting.

    The newspaper-style menu features a choice of dishes beyond just meat, including quite an impressive selection of high-quality tapas, as well as salads, pastas, pizzas, fish and some Thai cuisine. The meats are certainly the best option, though, with the choice including rotisserie chicken, Australian Black Angus and New Zealand lamb, all prepared on a wood charcoal grill.

  • We tried the salmon rillettes tapas starter (slow-cooked salmon, grape seed oil mayonnaise, spring onions and condiments - 220 baht), which had a strong and distinctive flavour, really bringing out the best of the fish. We followed this up a 300g cut of 200-day grain fed Australian ribeye Black Angus (940 baht), cooked perfectly to taste and served with a tangy béarnaise sauce (40 baht) and smooth truffle mashed potatoes (140 baht) – a divine combination. The quality of the meat really showed, and its simple preparation and presentation meant that there were no unnecessary distractions from the robust flavours.

    All of these, as well as the delightful signature sticky toffee cookie dessert (half-baked cookie, salted butter caramel and Tahiti vanilla ice cream – 260 baht) were recommended by owner Chris, who takes a personal interest in ensuring every diner’s experience is as good as it can be. His staff are very polite and friendly, but they are also unobtrusive and informal (even down to their simple uniform) enough that CUT Grill & Lounge Phuket still retains a great relaxed atmosphere.

    CUT is as close to a beach club as you can get without actually being on the beach. They have a selection of sun loungers set out by the lake and an infinity-edge swimming pool right between lake and restaurant, with showers nearby. There’s also an impressive cocktail, champagne and wine list, with many of the cocktails served in fancy metal pineapples. Drinks prices start at 140 baht for a bottle of Heineken and 120 baht for a half pint of draught Chang, with a wide selection of soft drinks, smoothies, coffees and teas also available for less.

    While it is a little on the pricey side, the extremely high quality of the ingredients and service at CUT Grill & Lounge Phuket absolutely justifies the cost, as does the outstanding setting. This is never more clearly illustrated than between 19:30 to 20:30 on any given day, when the place is absolutely packed. This obviously makes booking ahead highly recommended.
