El Gaucho restaurant is in Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket. Grilled meat is its speciality and the signature sunset views here help to add up to a genuine Phuket experience, mixing delicious food, drinks and sights. Situated on the western side of the resort, this upstairs terrace restaurant overlooks Karon Beach and diners can enjoy leisurely views of the Andaman Sea.
There’s a cheerful orange-and-red colour theme running through El Gaucho and the setting sun only serves to highlight this. A white reinforced canvas cover keeps the sun off during the day but we choose to sit under a full moon and the stars in the open air.
This is a big restaurant, with ample room for 100 diners and it’s atmospheric too: just as we sit down a cluster of nearby cicadas bursts out in their inimitable rattling and shrieking tropical chorus before heading off into the night, leaving the discreet background music to take over once again.

The menu at El Gaucho is full of exactly what the legendary South American gauchos (cowboys) are famous for – meat. Here, you can choose between veal scaloppini, slow-braised wagyu cheek, beef Zurich style (Mövenpick is Swiss owned), lamb shank, beef Wellington and a good selection of steaks and chops as well as a fish section. But the main attraction at El Gaucho is the all-you-can-eat Brazilian churrasco set menu that includes access to the salad bar with its freshly baked bread, cheeses and ham along with many vegetable choices.
At first we flinch when a smiling waiter appears with what looks like a sword dripping with blood but which transpires to be a large serving skewer with hunks of Australian beef tenderloin impaled on it. This is presented along with several sauces and gravies, Brazilian rice and grilled vegetables. Every few minutes the waiter reappears with another serving, only this time it’s rib-eye beef followed by deliciously grilled chicken, spare ribs and bacon-wrapped sausage.
The wine list at El Gaucho is also impressive and predictably has a good selection of South American labels – mostly from Chile and Argentina. We choose a young and fruity Trivento Roble from Mendoza on the eastern slopes of the Andes.
Of course, children are more than welcome at El Gaucho and if steaks are not to their liking they can avail themselves of the downstairs Sand Bar menu with its wood-fired pizza oven and hearty snacks. For dessert, the set menu offers a tropical fruit platter of dragon fruit, grapes, pineapple and more.
All in all, the churrasco set menu at El Gaucho is a very meaty and filling experience.
