Flavor - Organic Kitchen is a newcomer on the buzzing Phuket Old Town’s dining scene. Opened by the talented Belgian chef Erik Vranckx, Flavor is small in size but huge when it comes to the quality and elegance of the dishes it serves. Erik’s commitment to the high standards of the ingredients he uses to create his dishes is second to none. Even though his products’ availability is not as developed in Thailand as in Europe, Erik uses exclusively organic products in his restaurant and the few products that do not have an organic certificate – beef meat for instance – has nevertheless the confirmation of coming from cattle bred in an open-air and natural environment.
Set in a small townhouse on Yaowarat Road, in the heart of the historical quarter of Phuket Town, Flavor has all the charms of a vintage bistro at which gourmets and epicureans share their passion for fine dining.

Flanked by an offset printing shop to its right and a clothes shop on its left, Flavor – Organic Kitchen doesn’t particularly stand out on Yaowarat Road; just its clear black and yellow sign indicates that you are at the right place. Inside, the setting is rather Spartan yet elegant: white walls decorated with illustrations in black and white frames, black polished concrete flooring and dark wood furnishing.
The dining room features eight tables that can accommodate up to 32 guests. The atmosphere is calm, with an unobtrusive soft Jazz musical background which complements the style, the cleanliness, and poise of the place. A bar stands to the back of the dining room, and an open kitchen is right behind it, allowing diners to see the chef in action.
The menu fits on a single page and features five starters, six main courses, and two desserts. Again, Erik’s focus on freshness and quality products is the reason for this relative brevity and anyway there is enough choice of dishes to satisfy anyone: for starters, we sample cold avocado soup with crabmeat (180 baht) and mozzarella/tomato/quinoa (180 baht, with real organic buffalo mozzarella from Napoli); For main course we enjoy filet of white snapper with red bean/mango salsa and avocado dressing (310 baht) and ‘today’s special’ – grilled chicken with pesto potato, wild rocket salad, tomato and olive oil (220 baht). Verdict: everything’s simply delicious! The flavours blend together, exploding in the mouth with an undeniable freshness and distinctive tastes; this is indeed affordable fine-dining.
The drinks list features all the usual suspects when it comes to soft drinks and beers, plus there’s a short list of organic fresh juices and shakes at 90 baht. The wine list presents two sparkling wines, four white, and three red wines, with a price ranging from 600 baht for a bottle of red Belleville Grenache-Shiraz-Merlot 2012 from France (which is also the house wine served at 150 baht per glass) to 2,150 baht for a bottle of sparkling Opere Trevigiane brut from Italy.
