Kantok Restaurant is the Thai food dining option at the Burasari Phuket resort towards the southern end of Patong Beach. As with most hotel restaurants, it is open to guests who are not staying at the hotel and, with its focus on real Thai-style homemade cooking, it is among the more recommendable Thai restaurants in town.
The restaurant’s name originates from a special small table used in the northern provinces of Thailand. Loaded down with small dishes, it is traditionally used to welcome important guests to the house. Two such selections are available in the menu and are intended to be shared between two people. The Andaman Royal Kantok (1,600 baht) features popular Phuket seafood dishes such as Tom Klong Talay (spicy seafood soup), Panaeng Goong (tiger prawns in Panaeng curry) and Hoy Maeng Poo Pad Prik Prow (wok-fried green mussels with chilli paste).
While Kantok Restaurant’s menu focuses on traditional Thai preparations, but with the use of the best possible ingredients. For example, the Massamun curry (420 baht) is prepared with Australian wagyu beef. The difference is very easy to taste as the resulting dish is very tender and tasty, with bold, distinctive flavours. Those ingredients not specially imported are locally-sourced and as fresh as possible, such as the fish for the delightful Pla Gao Thod Nam Pla (crisp-fried marinated grouper with spicy green mango salad – 480 baht).
There are separate menus for lunch and dinner available, as well as a special Thai buffet from 18:30 on Wednesdays for 750 baht per person, with traditional dance performances from 20:00 to 21:00. While the focus is on relatively simple traditional meals, a modest selection of international options are available, such as a classic Caesar salad (370 baht), steaks (starting from 590 baht), pizzas (from 270 baht) and pasta (from 300 baht).
As you can see, the price range for Kantok Restaurant is not really for the budget traveller, but the quality of the food absolutely justifies its cost. Unlike many restaurants serving Thai food at this sort of price, the flavours have not been dulled down to suit tourist taste buds. In addition, you can learn how to prepare some of these excellent dishes from the extremely experienced Chef Apichai and his team as the restaurant provides cooking classes.
Kantok Restaurant is located in the beautiful gardens of Burasari Phuket, close to the swimming pool and far enough removed from the nearby roads that you can enjoy a peaceful escape whether you choose to dine in the shaded outdoors section or in the air-conditioned interior. The restaurant has a separate entrance along Ruamjai Road, meaning that you do not need to walk through the reception or the rest of the hotel to get there.
