Karon Plaza is an L-shaped location along Lung Phochuan Road in Karon, on Phuket’s west coast. Made up of guesthouses, bars, restaurants, beauty salons and massage parlours, it’s an eclectic place that is not going to win any travel awards for its beauty and is not the keenest shopping destination on the island but is nevertheless an amusing place to stroll through, especially at night, when the place comes alive and the bars are rocking as you can simply make your purchases, have a meal, then party all in the same place.
Named after an adjacent hotel, Karon Plaza can be at times rather sleepy but several shopping opportunities await here: Boss Fashion House is a large tailors’ outlet and you should bargain the prices down to reasonable levels before striking a deal.

You’ll also find stalls selling sunhats, beachwear, ‘I Love Phuket’ T-shirts (indispensible for those from chilly northern climes), baseball hats and beach paraphernalia. Also along this soi is a Classico Design tailor shop.
Some restaurants to mention include the Thai Sala Bua (Lotus House) with a reasonably priced menu; an Italian-Thai setup called Baan Mama Noi specialising in seafood; its next-door neighbour – an air-conditioned Eastern European outlet with Russian-language signage and menu; Pineapple Café with a photo-menu; the open-sided and fan-cooled Thai-run 25 Cent eatery, and Swedish-run Nice Corner with fan-cooled outside seating great for people watching.
Those after a little racy nightlife (though decidedly pedestrian compared to Patong’s Soi Bangla) can check out Happy Bar and Enjoy Joy’s bar and the next-door 75 Cent Reggae Bar and Art with occasional pay-per-entrance live music and large-screen TV showing sporting events.
You’ll find a few massage parlours in Karon Plaza, as well as a PADI dive centre offering all sorts of scuba-diving courses for those interested in discovering the wonders in the neighbouring Andaman Sea. All in all, Karon Plaza is for those who like a quieter sort of nightlife and those who appreciate a little calm and tranquility and at the same time the opportunity to dine out, socialise, and generally take things a little slower.
