The Lost Legends of Phuket show at Underwood Art Factory is a total concept in itself: a dinner/show set in a real factory with post-industrial décor is really something new to Phuket, and without doubt one of the most original venues on the island.
Located on the Bypass Road (a few hundred metres after Premium Phuket Outlet) the restaurant, which was originally the factory’s canteen, is open every day, but it’s on weekends that things get really interesting with the Friday performances of the ‘Lost Legends of Phuket’ band, a group of talented musicians who have been living in Phuket for a while.
This whole concept is the brainchild of a creative man of art and industry: John Underwood, a world-renowned Australian designer.
Setting a dinner/show venue in a factory is a great idea as you are sure to have enough room. The place accommodates up to 100 seated guests and work is on the way to make Underwood Art Factory one of the biggest concert venues in Phuket with room for 400 people – including 300 seats.
Industry paraphernalia and unusual decorative items make the atmosphere of this place unique: wood, steel, red velvet, iron reinforcement bars, sculptures, Victorian-style hanging lamps are all used to good effect. The lighting focuses mostly on the stage and on the buffet, leaving the rest of the area pretty dark, which adds to the ambiance of the place.
The Lost Legends is about to create a multifaceted show: not only music but magic, opera, dance, many and different artistic options at Underwood Art Factory.
But for now, the Friday show is all about music with a five-piece band consisting of five different nationalities: Colin Hill, –, Australian – guitarist/vocalist; Pjae Stanley, American – singer; Mario Guili, Italian – drummer; Snake Piboon, Thai – bassist; Lek Hisashi, Japanese – keyboards & saxophone. All of them have been playing and touring in different bands around the world and it is John Underwood who, as a real music lover, had the idea to put together this show to entertain diners.
The band plays mostly classic rock songs: from Carlo Santana’s Black Magic Woman, to Dire Straits’ Sultans of Swing, to Joe Cocker’s Unchain my Heart, the music at Underwood Art Factory is blues, soul, pop and rock n’ roll and the quality is enough to give you the goose bumps at times!
Every first Saturday of the month, the Blues Revival Quartet takes the stage. The four members of this band are: Jiroaj Warakulnukroh (aka Kay Wara) - guitar and vocals; Don ‘dB’ Bernhardt – bass; Ricky Haldemann – drums; Sherman Rubin – Piano. The four experienced musicians share their love for Blues with the audience. More than technical ability and skill, Blues music comes from the heart, and the Blues Revival Quartet delivers a set full of emotions.
To summarize, a night out at Underwood Art Factory is really a cool scene at a fair price for those looking for something different in Phuket. The strikingly original décor and atmosphere, the good food (buffet) and wine, the superb show, all add up to a sensory overload.
