Opened in 1999, Molly Malone’s Irish Pub is one of the longest established pubs in Phuket. Under Irish management (which also runs Coyotes Bar and Chicago Steakhouse in Patong) this classy and affordable establishment offers punters a wide range of entertainment options as well as quality pub grub and drinks in classic and stylish Gaelic décor and a warm and friendly atmosphere.
Live sports broadcasts, live music and pool tables pull in the punters but Molly Malone’s location is also enviable as it faces the sea on Patong Beach Road and the venue’s terrace is a perfect place to enjoy a cold pint of Guinness at sunset.
With dark wood furniture, ceiling beams plus traditional Irish green walls, the pub’s décor is classic and exudes a tangible ‘at-home’ feeling (at least to its British customers). The pub is pretty large and can easily host up to 250 revelers. It is divided in three areas: the terrace with eight tables; a long bar counter to the left, a long high table with bar stools and a dozen tables, the central part of the pub covers approximately 200sqm. At the back is a large room with three pool tables and imitation leather sofas where you can play pool for free until 18:00 daily.
Live sports (football, rugby, Formula 1, tennis, wrestling, you name it) are broadcasted on 12 TV screens and each TV is able to show a different programme. The atmosphere is typical of a local Irish pub, warm and friendly with a few long-term Phuket residents adding a local flavour but the live music is the cherry on Molly Malone’s cake. Two bands share the stage on a weekly base; from Monday to Saturday, an excellent and well-known Filipino band, ‘The Chosen’ covers pop and rock classics with its experienced musicians and pretty girl singers while on Sundays, ‘The Red Hot Potatoes’ take to the stage and deliver traditional Irish music such as The Long Black Veil and The Irish Rover. Live music starts at 21:30.
Pub grub classics are the bestsellers (see below) at Molly Malone’s Irish Bar, but the kitchen team has a lot more on offer with a good selection of Thai favorites such as chicken cashew nuts, phad thai, beef massaman, breakfast sets and desserts. The beverage list has no less than six draught beers - Chang, Singha, Tiger, Heineken, Guinness and Kilkenny – which also are available in bottles, as are San Miguel and Corona. Traditional pub lovers will feel at home as Kepplers Irish and Magner’s ciders are also on the list as well as 13 shooters, 14 cocktails and the usual spirits. Daily happy hour lasts until 22:00 (99 baht pint of Chang, 100 baht frozen cocktails and 120 baht double vodka Red Bull).
Here are the five favourite/best selling dishes at Molly Malone’s (prices May 2013):
- Beef & Guinness pot pie – 299 baht
- Bangers & mash – 289 baht
- Cottage pot pie – 269 baht
- Fish & Chips – 299 baht
- Guinness Irish beef stew – 299 baht
You won’t leave this place hungry as portions are huge! Summing up, Molly Malone’s is a very nice place, run professionally by a dedicated team, that offers a taste of Ireland even though it’s far away from home.
