Monkeypod is an immaculately-white café/restaurant on the roadside in Paklok, a few kilometres from Phuket’s iconic Heroine’s Monument, on the way to Bang Pae Waterfall. Being impeccably clean and the only air-conditioned eatery in the area, it’s not surprising that it’s well frequented and popular.
We choose to sit outside at one of the six solid wood trellis tables that are set under several towering parasol-shaped monkey pod trees (also known as saman, rain tree, giant thibet, and the engagingly amusing cow tamarind). Gazing around, we have to admit that this place is definitely easy on the eye; the brightly lit white interior features handsome wooden tables, a powerful yet discreet sound system and a bar that also features coffee and an array of fresh fruit all ready to go into the health drinks served here.

Outside, in the more discreetly lit al-fresco section, diners can watch as their food is prepared in the semi-open kitchen (also themed white) and enjoy the deliciously cool evening breezes.
The menu features western and Thai dishes and has a Thai-language section (local restaurateurs please take note!) that offers genuine and fiery southern dishes worth trying out. We order spicy chicken wing pizza, cordon bleu chicken with a rambutan cream sauce, a beef burger and potato wedges and start with a Greek salad and tomato caprese.
The vegetables are as fresh as can be, the portions generous, and the thin-crust pizza a complete meal in itself while the cordon bleu is done to a turn with a beautifully complementing sauce.
This is all washed down with a hearty house red chosen from a 14-label wine list – again all very reasonably priced and this in itself is a good reason to go to Monkeypod. For dessert you can also choose from 15 flavours of the excellent été ice cream or sample deep-fried banana with caramel sauce or chocolate mousse.
To sum up; the beauty of Monkeypod lies in its clean-lined simple décor, reasonable prices, on-the-ball service, and all set in attractive surroundings. But even more than that, it’s the perfect place to enjoy to option of spanking-fresh western cuisine paired with classic southern Thai cuisine. It’d be hard to better this combination of factors.
