Oriental Spoon Grill & Bar is the signature restaurant of Twinpalms, a stylish resort located in Surin Beach on Phuket's west coast. Extremely chic and trendy, Oriental Spoon and its adjacent Wine Room can host up to 130 guests in modern and innovative settings blending cutting edge architecture and Thai traditional decorative elements and materials.
Open daily for breakfast (07:00 – 10:30), dinner (16:00 – 23:00) and Sundays for a very popular brunch (food only 1,390 baht ++ from 12:00 – 15:00, reservation recommended), Oriental Spoon is one of the leading restaurants in the Surin area, and its reputation for fine dining exceeds expectations as half of its clientele comes from outside the resort.
Set to the front of Twinpalms Phuket, Oriental Spoon Grill & Bar can be directly accessed from outside. The restaurant features four distinctive areas as follows: a long corridor-like al fresco covered terrace offering a great sundowner spot (the Andaman Sea can slightly be seen through the trees); a cosy bar and lounge area with comfortable sofas, naturally lit through the large windows set on two side walls of a double height ceiling; a large dining room with open kitchen; and the Wine Room located nearby in which the well-stocked wine cellar and a long table that can host up to 20 guests await private parties and Sunday brunchers.
The atmosphere of the restaurant is plush and refined yet the dressing code remains casual. Soft Jazz music (revisited covers of famous tunes such as Heal The World by Michael Jackson for instance) complement the relaxed ambience of the venue while the sun sets behind the trees to the west. An attentive and very professional team with a good level of spoken English assures that guests are pleased without being too obtrusive.
Oriental Spoon Grill & Bar serves Thai/oriental and western fusion food; two separate menus present the different types of cuisine. The Thai menu is particularity original as it introduces the four coloured sorts of rice available as side-dishes: Butterfly Pea Rice (blue), Pandanus Rice (brown), Turmeric Rice (yellow), and Roselle Rice (purplish-red); each sort has specific health benefits.
The Thai menu features all the classics of Thai cuisine including tom yam goong (Thailand’s most famous spicy seafood soup – 390 baht), tom kha gai (chicken in full flavoured coconut milk – 350 baht) and gai phad med mamuang (chicken with cashew nuts – 350 baht) to name a few.
The western menu features good choice of salads and appetizers (fresh spinach salad with warm crispy bacon, poached egg, croutons, strawberries, cherry tomatoes, and sunflower seeds – 370 baht), soups (new England chowder with crackers – 290 baht), market seafood (pan-fried scallop with asparagus, mash potatoes, tomatoes and lobster sauce – 530 baht), daily Chef’s special (rack of lamb Provençal with ratatouille – 1,290 baht), pasta (penne pasta puttanesca – 430 baht), and desserts (dark chocolate cake with vanilla sauce – 250 baht).
The term 'fine dining' would be fitting to describe the food served at Oriental, and the passion and commitment of the Thai Chefs in preparing their dishes is second to none; a great address in Surin for some state-of-the-art dining.
