Great Cake Shops in Phuket Town

Phuket is home to a great many coffee and cake shops, particularly in Phuket Town. The selection ranges from simple patisseries to chic and sophisticated coffee houses, with exotic selections of beverages and snacks available in elegant surroundings. Some have a more bohemian approach and combine relaxing with a hot drink and a sweet snack with reading a good book. They all provide a welcome break from exploring Phuket Old Town.

With its large French expatriate community and historic European influences, the pastries available at the 6 Best Coffee and Cake Shops in Phuket are effectively unrivalled throughout Thailand. The cakes, in particular, show a great flair for creative baking and are as beautiful to look at as they are divine to taste. If you need somewhere to rest your travel-worn feet for a few minutes and recharge for another blast of exploration, the places below are ideal for you.

    Since 1892
Since 1892 on Thalang Road, Phuket

No, this appealing café hasn’t been open as long as that, but the Sino-Portuguese building in which it stands could well have been standing since 1892. You can recognise this café by the cast iron round tables and chairs outside in the street archway.

Inside it is a veritable bazaar of clothes, home décor, old typewriters and carved soap – just about the last place you’d imagine to sip a coffee and nibble a cake but yes, you can get a nice slice of chocolate cake for 79 baht here, along with teas, homemade Bonito ice cream and a selection of coffees. Air conditioned.

    Bo(ok)hemian Arthouse - Nang (Sua)
Bo(ok)hemian Arthouse - Nang (Sua) on Thalang Road

And yes, this is a very Bohemian sort of place, with concrete floors, lots of Thai-language books, sketches of Phuket Town mounted on its chipped concrete walls, a shelf of DVDs next to a selection of foreign books and a display of postcards. It’s not the most cheerful looking of places but you can score an iced coffee for 70 baht or a latte for 60 baht and there’s a glass-fronted fridge with homemade cakes. Open fronted and fan cooled, it’s a good place in which to watch the world go by.

    Mac-Chiato House (aka Cake Box)
Mac-Chiato House (aka Cake Box) on Thalang Road

This is a tasteful café with large black-and-white photos of famous personalities in its front section, two computer terminals (with free Wi-Fi), purses and bags for sale and lots of magazines to browse through. It also smells deliciously of quality coffee in here although there is also an impressive display of tea choices.

To the rear, past the ‘bar’ stands a cute, fan-cooled garden space with wooden chairs and tables. Mac-Chiato House offers a good selection of banana, blueberry, orange, and cheese cakes. Colourful, friendly and chic, this is a good hanging-out spot.

Pirrera at the corner of Dibuk and Yaowarat Roads

Making the corner of Dibuk and Yaowarat Roads Pirrera’s rough-looking exterior looks as though it’s been peppered with machine gun fire but thankfully once inside among the aroma of banana muffins, scones, cranberry cake and cheese-and-onion toasties, things get a lot better.

Pirrera is run by Khun Eyu, a qualified pastry chef, who gives classes upstairs in her patisserie school. Unlike quite a few Phuket Town cake outlets, there’s a full menu here – even stretching to cocktails from 120 – 150 baht. Chocolate cake and a vodka tonic; now there’s an interesting combination.

    Siam Bakery
    Siam Bakery

Siam Bakery is a Phuket Town institution – it’s been feeding the hungry with sandwiches prepared on the spot, tuna, ham and cheese croissants (65 baht), and French bread sandwiches (85 baht) for well over 10 years. French-owned, it is quite simply the best place for a light lunch with coffee in the quarter, and their viennoiseries and cakes are certainly among the best ones available in Phuket town.

Décor wise Siam Bakery is a lot less quirky than its somewhat over-reaching competition but it does have a nice line in quirky and colourful crockery. You can get a fresh cup of coffee here for a very reasonable 50 baht.

    • Opening Hours: Monday to Saturday from 08:00 – 18:00
    • Location: Yaowarat Road opposite the entrance to Phang Nga Road

    Café y Té
Café y Té on Phang Nga Road

As well as having a cute little archway terrace, Café y Té has a very attractive interior with faux-pine floors, garden chairs and round glass top tables, sofas, as well as white bar stools. This air-conditioned café offers blueberry cheese cake, chocolate fudge for 80 baht and apple crumble – also for 80 baht.

The owner spent some time in Spain and the colourful and cheerful décor underscores this fact. For an afternoon tea/coffee experience it is one of the best in town.

    • Opening Hours: 10:00 – 22:00
    • Location: Phang Nga Road, next to the clock tower
