Phuket is the largest island in Thailand and at 576sqkm covers a similar area to Singapore. The Phuket Island and City Tour focuses on the southwestern part of the island, where some of the most renowned beaches and resorts are situated. In your VIP minibus you pass through Patong Beach – the main centre of Phuket tourism, and head south along the coastal road to Karon Beach - a tranquil family destination, and then Kata Beach with Koh Pu (Crab Island) in the background.
The Kata/Karon Viewpoint is the first stop along the road. Located a few kilometres south of Kata, it enjoys an impressive vista comprising Kata Noi, Kata and Karon Beaches. The second stop is at Laem Promthep – Promthep Cape (meaning ‘Pure God’s’ Cape), an important landmark for centuries by seafarers traveling up the Malay Peninsula. Nowadays, it is a choice place for wedding photography, and sunset views.
After a visit at a Chao Ley (Sea-Gypsy tribe) village in Rawai Beach, get immersed in Buddhism – the major religion in Thailand, at the splendid temple of Chalong. Wat Chalong is the largest and most important temple in Phuket. It is dedicated to two highly venerable monks who led the resistance against a Chinese Coolie rebellion in 1876. Phuket Island & City Tour basic programme end there… but see below for interesting options available to spice up your discovery of Phuket.
Three Phuket landmarks are among the additional options to choose from in the Phuket Island & City Tour: Phuket Big Buddha - the latest Phuket landmark with super views out over Kata Beach and Chalong Bay, Phuket Weekend Market, where shoppers and gourmets are equally happy, and Phuket Old Town – and its Sino-Portuguese architecture from the end of the 19th century.
Other tour options are more dedicated to shopping with visits to a large gems and jewelry shop, a cashew nut factory (where you’ll realise why cashew nuts are so expensive), and a herbal centre which offers natural and healthy cosmetic products.
All in all, the Phuket Island and City Tour is a great affordable and quick introduction to Phuket as in a matter of just four hours you can see quite a lot of beautiful and interesting things and learn a lot about local life in southern Thailand.
