SALT ON SURIN IS NOW PERMANENTLY CLOSED.
Salt on Surin, established in 2013, has been a welcome addition to Surin’s beach club scene. Managed by Claire Cookson, who also runs Pepper’s Sports Bar & Restaurant at nearby Cherng Talay’s Tinlay Place (Salt & Pepper… geddit?), Salt on Surin adds a feeling of cool professionalism to this popular Phuket beach.
A perfect sundowner spot, the open-sided venue overlooks the Andaman Sea through tropical almond and palm trees. Salt has seating for up to 40 people in a contemporary style setting with tables & chairs made from durable ersatz water hyacinth. The area in front of Salt is a public area, yet, on occasions, tables are temporary set on the sand for special or private parties. Access to the beach is via a concrete staircase.
Salt on Surin’s main building is long and low, separated from the beach by a narrow walkway. Here, you’ll find the club’s bar, a few tables and a long counter-like table with high stools in a great people-watching spot facing the beach. There is also a large-screen TV where sports aficionados can catch up on matches and events. Free Wi-Fi is also available throughout the venue while kayaks and stand-up boards are also for rent.
The music here lends a tropical and party feel with soft exhilarating dance tunes played at a discreet volume, giving the place a chilled-out feeling. On occasions local DJs rock the place, enhancing the beach club ambiance.
Food matters at Salt on Surin, and the quality of the fare served here is already famous worldwide. Chef Dew is an experienced culinary artist, having worked for three years as a chef at Shangri-La Hotel in Bangkok, before coming to Phuket where he worked as a private chef in the villas of venues such as Samsara in Kamala Beach and Loch Palm Golf Club in Kathu. His 11 years’ experience as a chef is definitely an asset for Salt on Surin.
Thai and western food are served here for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The lunch menu offers more items than at dinnertime, with a wide choice of beach snack-style dishes: salads, pizzas, fried rice and sandwiches. Note that for lunch, a free kid’s meal is offered when you buy one adult meal: this is definitely a family-friendly place.
The dinner menu offers about 20 options of Thai and western starters and main courses. Khao soi – crispy noodles curry with coconut cream and chicken, masaman curry and Thai beef salad are among clients’ favourite dishes. I sampled a Thai beef salad and Chef Dew brings a multitude of flavours in his tender strips of Australian beef infused with Thai spices and herbs, served in a dried rice-noodles basket. A must-try, beyond any doubt…
You won’t be disappointed at Salt on Surin; its excellent food, skillfully prepared cocktails, smiling English-speaking staff, comfortable seating and superb location all add up to make Salt on Surin a great place to enjoy life.
Oh, and Salt on Surin also has a good choice of yummy Italian ice-creams…
