Scruffy Murphy’s has several great things going for it: excellent live music, good pub food and a gargantuan choice of beers. A large venue, it is decorated like an Irish cellar pub with lots of stripped brickwork and giant wooden barrels. On any given night you can count at least 10 different nationalities here and its friendly atmosphere is conducive to impromptu conversations and banter.
You’ll be impressed by the bands playing at Scruffy Murphy’s: not flash or glittery, but great players and singers who perform from after nine o’clock onwards. If it all gets too much for you grab a seat on the terrace and people watch with a pint of Irish ale and a pie.
Food at Scruffy Murphy’s is typical pub fare, the same as you would find in any quality venue of this type all around the world: Pub breakfasts (three options), roasted nuts, chips/cheese/gravy, you name it. Burgers and sandwiches are also on the menu, including an exotic touch with their Chili Dog Baguette (a Mexican style beef chili on a freshly grilled baguette). On top of this, you can sample some excellent Thai and Asian delicacies: chicken Penang curry & rice, phad thai, phad si-ew, khao phad.
To wash down all this hearty food, Scruffy Murphy’s offers no less than seven draught beers: Guinness, Kilkenny, Black & Tan – the standard British beers; Tiger, Chang and Singha beers represent Asian beers along with Heineken. All the usual spirits, house wine and soft drinks are also available.
As a great Irish pub, Scruffy Murphy’s knows how to entertain its patrons with two talented bands: the Blessed play every night from Monday to Thursday and cover soul music, blues, and rock. The audience is welcome to ask for songs of their choice, and the two pretty singers are as talented as entertaining, cracking jokes with the crowd.
On Friday and Saturday nights, Neil and the Red Hot Potatoes take the stage and play favourite pub rock songs and traditional Irish fiddle tunes and reels. They are highly skilled musicians and well known in Phuket for their talent and skills. On Sunday evenings, there’s no live music but soccer rules on the large screens displayed all around the place.
Scruffies excels as an all-round family destination – one where you can take the kids for the evening and there is no hint of the imposing Bangla Road sauciness. Clean, welcoming and friendly; Scruffy Murphy’s is in a class of its own.
