Silk Restaurant at Kamala Beach
Fine Dining in a Sumptuous Setting
Silk is predominantly a Thai restaurant although it does have a two-page western menu. Set in the opulent grounds of Andara Resort & Villas in Kamala, Silk has equally sumptuous décor and design so dining here is regarded by many locals as a special occasion.
The restaurant moved from its Surin Plaza location several years back but has retained its class-act appeal, its reputation for good-quality Thai fare and pretty much the same fittings and plan.

Décor and Atmosphere
Silk is generous in its proportions with parquet flooring, large tubular lighting arrangements, a gleaming bar to the side, seating for up to 70 diners and two fan-cooled al fresco sections out by the resort’s swimming pool.
If all this sounds a little like a soulless warehouse with tables, it has to be said that the restaurant’s lighting is capable of transforming the atmosphere into an intimate one at the flick of a switch. Outside, a nice little touch is that diners can listen to the resort’s resident band playing in the middle distance.
Silk specialises in Thai dishes and its goong sarong (deep-fried prawns with crispy rice noodles) is unusual in its presentation, making the dish hard to enjoy without sending the noodles in several different directions at the same time. However, the tom yam gai is no disappointment: it comes in a sizeable portion with an agreeable balance of sliced button mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and chicken perfectly cooked in the soup’s broth. Spicy and full of character, it almost could have served as a mains dish.
Speaking of mains, grilled tuna with a portion of mixed vegetables (mostly avocado) is also filling and done to a turn. For such a well-polished Thai restaurant that obviously pays attention to details, it comes as a surprise to learn that even though the menu is in Russian and English it does not have a Thai-language version. Imagine the equivalent in Paris; there’d be nothing short of a riot.
Drinks-wise, Silk is no slouch with an extensive list of cocktails and our vodka martinis are nothing short of perfection while a Chilean cabernet sauvignon does the dinner justice in a light-hearted manner.
Silk has an extensive wine list but the markups are pretty steep; a fact that may deter diners from enjoying a good bottle of wine with their dinner.
There’s no doubt about it: Silk delivers high-quality food in a sumptuous setting with very professional and discreet service but it doesn’t come at bargain-basement prices. Far from it: expect to pay western tariffs here.
Head for the Andara Resort on the southern flank of Kamala Bay. Do not turn into the first entrance, rather round the corner to the left and enter there. It is well signed.
