The Cove Phuket is an extremely laid-back beachfront restaurant and bungalows located right by the sand of the quaint and quiet Ao Yon Beach on the Panwa peninsula in southeast Phuket. Managed by a friendly, well-travelled couple, it has a great selection of mostly European food, an impressive drinks menu and superb sunset views.
Found in the location of what was once The Secret Cove, the old venue was totally removed and rebuilt as a fresh, modern, trendy place. It has five small but fully-equipped bungalows (three by the beach and two more up on the hill, with a more commanding view of the quiet little bay), a well-stocked bar and a beachside terrace. They even have their own little artificial beach so that they can put out sun loungers, which diners are welcome to use.

The bar plays a cool selection of chill-out music and has a great choice of signature cocktails to make this an ideal place for an easy-going day by the sea. The Cove Phuket’s own take on the Mojito, at 250 baht, is a great choice, being slightly sweeter than the standard version. The choice of soft drinks, juices, spirits and beers is pretty standard (and fairly priced, with a local beer costing 90 baht). The wine list has an impressive choice of new and old world labels and there is a choice of no less than nine flavours of Martini, including watermelon (250 baht) and mango chilli (350 baht).
The food menu continues the beach club style of the venue, being mostly snack-style dishes, served in baskets and on wooden boards. The choice of dishes available isn’t huge, but it is varied and the quality of ingredients and preparation is excellent.
The very personable and friendly Hungarian manager of The Cove Phuket recommends the salt and pepper squid (150 baht) and the barbecue peppered Japanese sashimi-grade tuna steak (680 baht) - and so do we! The squid was tasty and tender while the steak had a robust meaty flavour which the tangy grilled artichoke and tomato salsa it is served with complimented well. The menu also features sandwiches, salads and sourdough wood-fired pizzas from 210 baht.
With its fantastic location right on one of the most striking secret beaches on the island, its high-quality cuisine at reasonable prices and its friendly and relaxed atmosphere (not to mention the availability of beach chairs and sun loungers just a handful of steps from the sea), The Cove Phuket is ideal for those looking for a place to unwind in peace and comfort. It is also a beautiful romantic sunset dining spot in Ao Yon.
