  • The Kee Sky Lounge in Phuket

A 360-degree view Rooftop Restaurant in Patong Beach

    0

The Kee Sky Lounge is a unique rooftop restaurant overlooking Patong Beach with 360-degree views. Located off the Beach Road, this restaurant is part of the Kee Resort & Spa; a hotel opened in 2012 between the famous Bangla Road’s Soi Sea Dragon and Patong Beach Road. A surprising fact is that even though The Kee Sky Lounge is right in the noisiest and most bustling part of Patong Beach, up there on the roof you can only hear the breeze, the sound of the waves breaking, and the restaurant’s sound system playing classic jazz and soft Brazilian music.

The views are great and this is one of the reasons why the Sky Lounge is a perfect sundowner spot. You reach the rooftop with a high-tech and illuminated lift set on the front of the hotel’s central building. The Sky Lounge has two terraces on two levels covering approximately 200sqm. The first level is almost 100sqm, with a circular bar in its centre and nine tables allowing seating for up to 50 guests. There are also two enclosed dining rooms in case the weather doesn’t allow al fresco dining and drinking. The second level is a large terrace with a bar and a few tables which afford intimacy.

  • The central part of the Kee Sky Lounge is the large circular bar where skilled bartenders offer a juggling show while preparing the cocktails. The décor is classy in a beige and soft grey colour theme, while the violet-coloured aluminum furniture is modern and complemented by white tablecloths. The lighting arrangements are pretty well thought out at the Sky Lounge and lend a futuristic touch to the atmosphere while the lift, the bar, and the globe-shaped lamps on the tables all slowly and almost imperceptibly change colour.

The small dining room has only four tables. In there, guests can see their meal preparation in the open kitchen. The wine cellar is right next to the kitchen and displays an impressive selection of new and old world wines and champagnes. The other dining room is larger and can accommodate up to 60 guests. It also can be used for private parties. But the main attraction of the Sky Lounge is dining under the stars, between sea and sky, so close and yet so ‘far’ from busy Patong over which you can enjoy 360-degree views.

The Kee Sky Lounge defines itself as an ‘East-meets-West’ restaurant. Khun Sonthaya, the Thai Chef, enjoys juggling and mixing flavours and the result is quite delectable. I had the chance to dine in the good company of Khun Somchai, the resort manager, and we sampled some highly recommendable dishes: for starters seared scallops with mango salsa and wasabi soy sauce (400 baht), Parma ham, mozzarella and warm potato salad (380 baht). For mains we had Cajun swordfish with tomato lime salsa and guacamole, roasted garlic mash potatoes and chili confit (500 baht), wasabi crusted tuna steak, herbs and potato salad (550 baht) and we finished our meal with chocolate pavolva with mixed fruits (200 baht), and a lava chocolate cake with vanilla ice-cream (200 baht). What a treat!

The menu is not very extensive but there’s something for all tastes on it; on top of this, the chef creates a weekly signature dish. The beverage list offers a good choice of 29 cocktails all priced between 220 and 250 baht – from a classic mojito (Chalong Bay rum, fresh lime, brown sugar, mint leaves and soda) to a naughty ‘69’ (black sambuca, blue curaçao and John Jameson whiskey) – you’re sure to find something to sip while watching the sun going down.

The Kee Sky Lounge has a classy touch yet delivers the goods at fair rates. It is the perfect place for a special, but affordable evening while visiting Patong Beach. Most of the restaurant’s customers come from outside the hotel which is a sign of quality. Service is excellent (don’t miss the bartender’s juggling show), with dedicated, smiling and professional delivery.

Usually a big-city concept (Bangkok’s rooftop restaurants are numerous and well known) Patong Beach has now its very own classy rooftop dining place. If you’re driving, it’s good to know that the Kee has a large underground parking.
